SUEZ CANAL is in egypt between red sea and mediterranean sea.

1857 BC: planning started to make a canal.
many king came into rule tried to improve and expand the canal.
1799: Napolean also tried, due to measurmental error it came to end.
mid-1800: French diplomats convinced then egyptian viceroy to carry construction of
canal forward.
1858: a company took contact for making canal. the contact had a deal that after
construction the canal will be owned by the company for 99 years and then will be
handed over to egyptian government.
the company had its major shares with french and british.
1869: the canal opened for international exchanges.
under the deal the egyptian gov. would get the canal in 1968.
1934: British troops came in and surrounded the canal. this led to discomfort to
egyptian nationalist.
1954: DUe to pressure by nationalists britain-egypt sighned 7 YEAR TREATY that led
to withdrawal of british troops from the canal.
During this time egyptian president wanted to make dam on river nile flowing in
egypt. America had promised to fund the construction but they backed out. this made
the then president furious and he declared that the will make the dam themself and
the revenue required will be fullfilled by suez canal.
So the president nationalised the suez canal. this made britain angry and it asked
french and isarael to help attack and take back the canal.
1956, OCTOBER,THE ATTACK known as the SEUZ CRISIS started.
Soveit union to exploit and gain foothold in middle east, decided to help egypt and
started supplying arms to them.
USA also threatened the 3 countries with withdraing santions. this made them to
back out and egypt won.

A ship- EVER GIVEN- 400m long got stuck in the suez canal. It happened due to poor
visibilty, high wind and sand storm. Edge of the ship hit the bank and got stuck in
the soft soil.

to solve this kind of situtaion is to 1) the limit of the length of the ship which
can pass through the canal is 400m. so the limit can be lowered. but it would
affect the trade.
but long term solution is to expand the area of the canal to the sides.
