Reflection Paper for Science Film Viewing

(Science Week)

Based from what I have watched a documentary series titled “Virus Hunters”, I
discovered that there are several researchers and scientist, particularly bat
ecologists that studies about what viruses’ does bats can transmit to people. By
conducting their study they catch bats on a certain mountain at Laguna on Mt.
Makiling/ Maria Makiling with the help of forest rangers. They use net mist to catch
bats, this kind of net is used by hunters even poachers to capture wild birds and
bats. This net can not be easily by animals because it blends on the forest
background. That day they captured a Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus Arcuatus) a type
of common type of bat that can be seen in the Philippines. According to documentary
I’ve watched there study supposed to be what viruses can bats transmit to people, to
where on the Philippines bats viruses can be seen. With the collaboration of Jpanese
Universities, and UPLB Institute of Biological Sciences there study is still on going,
because they’re able to continue it with the help of Japan giving funds. I also learned
that bats can travel to different state to another even though they have such disease
called “Transboundary Animal Diseases”. If the local government wil be able to give
them funds there study can help a lot of people because they indicate the different
danger bats carry.
Why Giant Ground Sloths Went Extinct?
Based from what I’ve watched about Ground Sloths, they are one of the large
mammals in North America that went extinct 13,000 years ago. Their extinction is
caused by the mixed climate change they experience and human hunting that made
them totally extinct. Some researchers found footprints of this Giant Ground Sloth
because of its paws, this paws are extraordinary because this is their main weapon
for their predators.
Methane gas are formed over millions of years when decay process starts,
this is caused or formed from dead plant and animal that results in formation of air at
the bottom of lakes and oceans. Once this methane gas explode, it affects a lot of
individuals, especially human once exhaled and several diseases can be experience
by the victim. Methane gas are not just formed underground this can also be emitted
by animals through their poop, even humans, and processed meat once they’re
being process they emit methane gases. Methane gases are often used as energy
sector like emissions from coal, oil, natural gas and biofuels, that’s why it is also
considered as agriculture despite of its some disadvantages to our environment and
to human health.
