QUIZ in Statistics and Probability 11

Name: ___________________________________________________Date Started: ______________________

Strand: ___________________________________________________Date Finished: _____________________
A. Fill the blank with the correct answer. (Correct Decision, Type I Error or Type II Error)

𝐻0 : The defendant is innocent.

𝐻𝑎 : The defendant is not innocent.
1. If the defendant is convicted and he or she has committed the crime, then it is a ____________.
2. If the defendant is convicted but he or she did not commit the crime, then it is a _____________.
3. If the defendant is acquitted and he or she did not commit the crime, then it is a ____________.
4. If the defendant is acquitted and he or she did commit the crime, then it is a _____________.

B. Directions: Solve the hypothesis testing problem by using these 5 steps:

Step 1: State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
Step 2: Find the critical values. (Draw the critical region)
Step 3: Compute the test value. (z-test or t-test)
Step 4: Make the decision to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.
Step 5: Conclusion.
5. Nowadays, people tend to buy products online. The shipping department manager claims that the average
order shipped by their company is 1.89kgs. The general manager wants to verify if his claim is true. So, he
randomly selects 25 sample of orders. What can the general manager conclude at 0.05 level of significance if
the sample has a mean weight of 2.07kgs with a standard deviation of 0.72kg?

6. The XYZ Company has developed a new battery. The engineering department of the company claims that each
battery lasts for 200 minutes. In order to test this claim, the company selects a random of 100 new batteries so
that this sample has a mean of 190 minutes with a standard deviation of 30 minutes. Test the engineering
department claim that the new batteries run with an average of 200 minutes. Use a 0.025 level of significance.

C. Identify the population proportion and sample proportion of each problem and check whether the sample is
sufficiently large enough to use the Central Limit Theorem in normal approximation.

7. It is believed that at least 40% of the residents in a certain area is in favor of abolishing the death penalty. Out
of the 500 residents surveyed, 210 are in favor of the issue.
8. A pharmacy claims that 9 out of 10 doctors recommend Ibuprofen to combat migraine. To test this claim, a
random sample of 400 doctors is obtained so that only 320 of them indicate that they recommend Ibuprofen.

D. Directions: Follow the 5 steps in solving the given problems for a test of hypothesis on the population
proportion.
Step 1. HYPOTHESES
Step 2. LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE
Step 3. TEST STATISTIC
(Compute for 𝑧𝑐 )
Step 4. CRITICAL VALUE/P-VALUE
(Illustrate the rejection/non-rejection region)
Step 5. DECISION/CONCLUSION

9. A potato chip producer and a supplier of potatoes agree that each shipment must meet certain quality standards. If the
producer is convinced that more than 8% of the potatoes in the shipment have blemishes, the truck will be sent away and
another one would have to be sent. In a recent shipment, a sample random sampling of 80 potatoes was selected and 7
had blemishes. Use α= 0.01.

10. In a public senior high school, a survey conducted last year by the barangay health workers showed that 25% of the
students drink alcohol. This year, a new survey was conducted randomly on 450 students from the same school and it was
found out that 54 of them drink alcohol. Determine if the claim that there is a decrease on the proportion of senior high
school students who drink alcohol is true. Use α = 0.05.
