1. Why is stylistics important in language studies? What can stylistics tell us about language?
Stylistics analysis has two major goals: first is to help the readers in making meaningful interpretation of
the text and second one is, in general, expand the knowledge and awareness of language. These aims are
helpful for students to read and study literature with excellent language practice. Stylistics explores how
readers interact with the language of (mainly literary) texts in order to explain how we understand, and are
affected by texts when we read them.
2. Compare and contrast linguistics, literary criticism, and stylistics. How are they similar and different?
And how are they linked with each other?
The only difference between stylistic analysis and literary criticism, is that literary criticism goes directly to
its text evaluation subjectively and is impressionistically independent from the linguistic form of the test.
The presence of literary criticism has been studied extensively in the literature. Both literary criticism and
stylistics attempt to commend and expose a work of arts. The only difference between the two approaches
is that in the former, a critic expresses his own opinion of what the text means, whereas, a stylistician offers
structural evidence to support his interpretation of the meaning.
3. What are the features of linguistic stylistics?
Linguistic stylistics, however, looks for style in terms of linguistic features of a text at different levels of
linguistic description like phonology (onomatopoeia, alliteration, eye dialect, and rhyme), syntax (repetition,
and question in the narrative), grammar (dialect), and sematics (metaphor, irony, and simile)
4. What was the background of becoming stylistics a controversial subject among literary critics and
linguists?
5. What is foregrounding and how does it operate in the text?
6. What is a register and why does it matter? (Why is it important to use appropriate varieties of registers in
language or in a certain communication context? How Register differs from Style?
