COURSE OBJECTIVE

The primary goal of the course is to acquaint and familiarize students with the main pillars in this arena
of international law and their effect on domestic law and policy. The course covers the key agreements
and principles of international trade law and the jurisdiction, policies and processes of the WTO.

UNIT-1

Global Economics and International Trade Law, Protectionism vs Free Trade Birth of GATT, 1947, GATT
Rounds of Negotiations, WTO (Uruguay Round 1986 to 1994), WTO Agreements, Understandings,
Annexes

UNIT-2

Principles on Non-Discrimination in GATT & WTO, Most-favoured-Nation Treatment (MFN) Exceptions to


MFN ( Customs Unions and Free Trade Areas) Regional economic Associations like NAFTA, BRICS, SAFTA,
ASEAN etc. National treatment principle, Exceptions to National Treatment Principle, protection
through tariffs, dispute settlement.

UNIT-3

World trade organization, structure/function/working of WTO, decision making in WTO, agreements


under WTO, TRIPS, TRIMS,AOA,GATS, etc , dispute settlement mechanism. Difference between GATT
and WTO,

UNIT-4

Agreement on agriculture, India’s commitments- market access, domestic support, export subsidies,
tariff quotas, India’s food security, Bali peace clause, general agreement on trade in services, modes of
services, specific commitments, progressive liberalization, agreement on trade related investment
measures, anti- dumping agreement, impact of anti- dumping on developing countries.

UNIT-5

Dispute Settlement Procedure under the WTO charter (refer Agreement on Dispute Settlement
Understanding), Consultation, Dispute Panel Body, Appellate Body, Implementation of
findings/decisions of WTO Dispute Settlement Body, WTO and developing countries(including India), on-
going multilateral negotiations
