Are you leaving? Does Sam know? Can I help?


Yes/No questions(= questions that we can answer with yes or no) begin with an
auxiliary verb (be, have, do) or a modal verb (e.g. can, should, will). We put the subject
after the auxiliary/modal verb.

73 When are you leaving?


Com que frequência?
[ When are you leaving? Where are you going? How often do you go there?

• Wh- questions begin with a question word (e.g. when, where, why). After the
question word, we use the same word order as in yes/no questions.
• We use:
- when to ask about time: When did you get here?
- where to ask about places: Where are you going?
- why to ask about the reason for something: Why were you late?
- how to ask about the way to do something: How do I get to town?
- how much/how many to ask about quantity:
How much money have you got? How many eggs do we need?
• We also use how to ask about somebody's health: How are you?
• We can use how+ adjective/adverb to ask about degree:
How tall are you? How often do you go there?
