Assessment Brief

Regulatory aviation documents such as Annexes or others are not updated frequently due to a
tedious process of identifying and agreeing on the updates needed. Therefore, advancements in
technology, best practices known to other industry sectors and academic fields, or lessons learnt from
recent accidents might take some time before they are considered for the next update.

As part of this assignment, you are assuming that you are a part of the ICAO/CAA managerial task
force set up to assess current Annex 13 and CAA Accident Investigation regulatory documents and to
suggest their possible improvements. Your report will be a part of the working papers presented at the
next meeting of the ICAO Council.

To improve this situation, your group (4-5 members max) have been assigned to study details and
accident investigation-related actions in one of major past aircraft accident “Air France AF447
Airbus 330” and to offer recommendations for improvements and additions to Accident Investigation
regulatory documents and procedures based on your findings.

Initially, the group must access relevant agency aircraft accident report and familiarise themselves
with it. To do that, each group member must consult the report to understand how the event has
developed, been investigated, and conclusions reached.

Based on this report and other publicly available sources found (e.g. press reports; news and/ or
professional publications; other media sources), the group will need to identify and present in the
report the timeline and actions of the accident investigation involved parties between them and
towards family/ friends and public. This must cover the time from the moment the accident happened
until the investigation has been closed. These parties include but are not limited to aviation regulator/
investigation agencies, companies involved, and aircraft/ engine or specialised equipment
manufacturers.

Once the timeline and actions of the parties have been captured and presented clearly, the group
report shall identify and discuss 3 to 5 recommendations for improvements and/ or additions to
Accident Investigation regulatory documents and procedures.

Remember, when thinking of and formulating your recommendations consider the best practices in
other fields or industries as well. Also, consider technologies available that can improve the accident
investigation data gathering or process to benefit aviation industry users and participants.

Although not commonplace in regulatory reports, you will need to cite relevant sources considered
when formulating your suggestions as your group report is done in the academic setting.

The academic setting of this assessment completion and LO4 of the Module requires the assessment
of individual group members’ contributions.

Therefore each group member will maintain a personal log of engagement with the group in terms of
date, time, and nature of interaction while completing the Group Report. Based on this log, each
Group member is going to write and submit an Individual Contribution and Group Engagement
Reflective Note (on the template provided) demonstrating and self-assessing their own contributions
to Group’s work as well as indicating other members’ participation while completing the Report.

This Note is confidential and will form a basis for the Practical Teamwork Demonstrated element of
the Assessment 2 mark. It is to be submitted by each group member following the same deadline as
for the Group Report part of Assessment 2.
