George Eastman
P
th
hotography was invented in France in the early part of the 19
century, and for many years it could be described as a “difficult” art.
A photographer had to have technical expertise, a lot of heavy, expensive
equipment, and the strength to carry all around.
th
In the late 19 Century, all of this began to change, thanks to George
Eastman. His first successful invention was a machine which coated the
glass plates used in cameras. To manufacture these plates, he set up the
company which is now known worldwide as Eastman Kodak.
Eastman continued to search for ways to simplify photography and by
1888, he had introduced his simple, easy- to – operate box camera which
was only 18 centimeters long and 10 centimeters wide. This was the first
camera to use a film on a roll, an idea which had also been perfected by
Eastman. This model cost $25, which was still very expensive in 1888, but by 1900, Eastman´s factory in
Rochester, New York, had produced the famous “Little Brownie” which sold for $1.00
The young inventor had given America a new Hobby: taking snapshots. Eastman told
the public.
“ You press the button we do the rest”. In1995, Americans “ pressed the button”
more than six billion times.
Over the years, George Eastman´s company had introduced to the public numerous
models of cameras, color film, movie cameras, and all sorts of photographic
equipment and supplies. Also the work carried out at Eastman Kodak had
contributed to medical and scientific research and has affected art, entertainment,
th
education and history in the 20 Century. It is ironic that the man who helped so
much with picture production was very shy and there are few pictures of him in
existence today.
