Benefits of Process Bus
Field installation – process level

From... 1. Almost no copper cable’s, no cable trays or they

are reduced in size - less civil works.
Merging units mounted in field in outdoor relay
cabinets close to primary equipment.
to 2. No commissioning and maintenance of copper
cables between the field and control room.
3. Fiber optic and MU’s with self-monitoring
features

4. No open circuits or secondary wiring

Page 7 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2022 | SI EA |

Benefits of Process Bus
Control room - station

1. No secondary cables, terminals - smaller relay

cabinets, less relay cabinets in substation
2. Easy implementable control, protection and
automation functions – no copper cables to connect
3. Less protection IED’s because of optimization

4. Easy to maintain and retrofit

5. Easy to test

Process Bus based on SIPROTEC 5 merging unit - 6MU85

The Merging Unit is the interoperable interface,

between primary and secondary equipment for process bus
solutions, conforming to IEC 61869 and IEC 61850-9-2.

Measured values of conventional and low power instrument

transformers are converted into standardized, Ethernet-based
telegrams (SMV).
