Edited by plastic surgeons, Chistine Hamori of the U.S. and Paul Banwell of the U.K.,

and an American urogynecologist, Red Alinsod, Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery is, to date,

the second recently published text book whose entire focus is on cosmetic surgery of the female

genitals. 15 authors, including the editors, contribute to the text, which has an international

flavor: authors hail from Colombia, Brazil, Australia, France, Russia, as well as U.K. and U.S.

D
Authors also hail from several specialties, with plastic surgery, gynecology, urogynecology,

urology, dermatology and cosmetic medicine represented. Both factors have resulted in a work

TE
which is broad in both content and perspective.

Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery consists of 17 chapters divided into 3 sections. Part 1

is an introduction to the topic, including well-written chapters on female genital anatomy and

indications for surgery and psychological considerations. The chapter, written by plastic surgeon
EP
and attorney, Neil Reisman, on informed consent and liability concerns, is particularly

informative. Part 2 covers surgical, minimally invasive (fat grafting and filler augmentation of

majora) and non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Commonly utilized labia minora, majora and

clitoral hood alteration techniques are described in detail, with abundant photographs and

illustrations. Perineoplasty, hymenoplasty and surgical vaginoplasty techniques are discussed in

two well-written chapters. Dr. Hamori’s chapter on the complications of cosmetic surgery of the

chapters on vaginal rejuvenation/tightening using either fractional erbium laser or

radiofrequency. Neither is a particularly new technique. An interesting, and in my opinion,

controversial chapter describes a novel platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection technique (with a

treatment for several genital conditions, including female sexual dysfunction and urinary

incontinence.

As is case with most textbooks published in recent years, Female Cosmetic Genital

Surgery is available as an e-book, and includes supplemental video content. 16 technique videos

are offered, covering the spectrum of the subject matter presented in the text. 5 labia minora

reduction videos, detailing marking and wedge and edge excision methods, are included, and are

the highlights.

TE
Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery is a well-produced, high quality text book. Layout, text

font and photograph and illustration quality make it a pleasure to read. Photographs and

illustrations are very good and consistent throughout. Overall writing quality, despite multiple

authors, is generally good. Unsupported opinion is generally absent, especially in describing

surgical techniques. The information presented is up-to-date and supported almost always by the

references offered. Plastic surgery and gynecology perspectives are both presented in about equal

amounts. The videos are high quality, definitely supplement the text, and are a highlight,

especially for those inexperienced in these procedures.

Drs. Hamori, Banwell and Alinsod are commended for the publication of this fairly

comprehensive textbook on the rapidly growing field of female genital cosmetic surgery.
