Algebra: Solving Proportions
To solve a proportion means to find the unknown value in the proportion. By examining how the
numerators or denominators of the proportion are related, you can perform an operation on one
fraction to create an equivalent fraction.

Example 1 3 b
Solve ᎏᎏ ⫽ ᎏᎏ.
4 12
Find a value for b that would make the fractions equivalent.

⫻3
3 b
ᎏᎏ ⫽ ᎏᎏ Since 4 ⫻ 3 ⫽ 12, multiply the numerator and denominator by 3.
4 12

⫻3

b ⫽ 3 ⫻ 3 or 9
Example 2 NUTRITION Three servings of broccoli contain 150 calories. How
many servings of broccoli contain 250 calories?

Lesson 6–4
Set up the proportion. Let a represent the number of servings that contain 250 calories.
150 calories 250 calories
ᎏᎏ ⫽ ᎏᎏ
3 servings a servings

Find the unit rate.

⫼3
150 calories 50 calories
ᎏᎏ ⫽ ᎏᎏ
3 servings 1 serving

⫼3

Rewrite the proportion using the unit rate and solve using equivalent fractions.

⫻5
50 calories 250 calories
ᎏᎏ ⫽ ᎏᎏ
1 serving 5 servings

⫻5

So, 5 servings of broccoli contain 250 calories.
