ABSTRACT

Modernization and increase in the number of automobiles worldwide, the

consumption of diesel and gasoline has enormously increased. Petroleum is non
renewable source of energy and the petroleum reserves are scare nowadays. Day by
day the demand for non renewable energy sources increases. The demand for
electricity and enamor us increase in the no. Of automobiles leads to demand for
petroleum based fuels. The cost of diesel will also become high in future. So some
developing countries are trying to use alternative fuels for their vehicles. There is a
need to search for alternative fuels for automobiles. Increasing the environmental
pollution by the usage of crude oils there is a need for the search of alternative fuel
sources for the automobile applications. There are many alternate fuels we already
existing like bio-diesel, bio-mass, alcoholic fuels, hydrogen, non-fossil methane and
non-fossil gases and other bio-mass sources which were useful for different
applications, out of these bio-diesels are one of the prominent alternative fuel for
diesel engines.

Bio diesel it is a name of clean burning alternative fuel produced from

domestic and renewable sources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum but it can be
blended at any level with diesel. It is a biodegradable, Non toxic, and essentially free
from sulphur. It is reliable, and renewable.

Therefore in the present investigation the oil taken is the waste transformer
oil .The transformer oil is produced from wax-free naphthenic oils. Transformer oils
are an important class of insulating oils. They act as a heat transfer medium in the
transformer. Afer certain period of time of operation in the transformer the oil is
thrown out in the form of waste. So planned to investigate the suitability of using
waste transformer oil as alternative fuel for compression ignition engine and
comparing its performance parameters with conventional diesel.

Entire experimental investigation is carried out on 4 strokes –twin cylinder
water cooled diesel engine. For this purpose preparing blends of transformer oil with
diesel like T10, T20, T30, and T40 and comparing its performance parameters with
conventional diesel. Among these blends selecting optimum blend and adding ignition
improver in a different proportions and finding optimum blend. Then comparing
performance parameters of the optimum blend with conventional diesel fuel. Here use
Isopropyl alcohol is as ignition improver for optimum blend. Based on the earlier
finding the current experimental investigation investigated the possibility of using
waste transformer oil is a diesil substitute.
