From the podcast, the DOJ investigates and prosecutes procurement fraud where the government is the

victim in domestic or international curtail investigations. Below are some of the roles of the DOJ in the
enforcement of antitrust:

Antitrust Law Enforcement

The Division prosecutes certain antitrust violations through criminal suits, which can result in significant
fines and jail sentences. In other cases, the Division files a civil action to obtain a court order prohibiting
future violations of the law and requiring steps to be taken to remedy the anticompetitive effects of
previous violations.

Providing Antitrust Law Guidance

The Division advises businesses on antitrust laws, which are done in collaboration with the Federal Trade
Commission. This guidance explains the limits of acceptable behavior and may reduce confusion about
the parameters of legal behavior. By assisting businesses in structuring and organizing their operations
according to the law, businesses and the government save money. A business must request a formal
review to receive guidance from the Division.

Serving as a Competition Advocate

In addition to enforcing antitrust laws, the Antitrust Division serves as a competition advocate,
promoting competition in sectors of the economy that are or may be regulated by the government.
Federally regulated industries such as communications, banking, agriculture, securities, transportation,
energy, and international trade are these sectors.

Insurance, housing, health care, public utilities, professional and occupational licensing, certain aspects
of banking, and real estate are all state or locally-regulated industries.

Participation in Executive Branch policy-making task forces, preparation of testimony on legislative

initiatives, publication of reports on regulated industry performance, and intervention in regulatory
agency proceedings are all part of the Division's advocacy efforts.
