This reflection report will discuss the news article, "SoftBank to meet Samsung to

explore Arm 'strategic alliance'" which was electronically published by Financial Times, a UK-

based publication, on September 22, 2022, and was authored by Inagaki et al., The article

discusses the potential strategic alliance between SoftBank and Samsung regarding the UK-

based chip designer ARM.

The news article is about Softbank and Samsung exploring a potential strategic alliance

between the two companies. SoftBank is a Japanese conglomerate and a major investor in

technology companies, while Samsung is a South Korean electronics giant. The companies are

looking to collaborate to develop and commercialize semiconductor technology and products

based on SoftBank's subsidiary Arm's architecture. This could mean that Samsung and Softbank

could work together to create new products and services that could revolutionize the technology

industry and provide a significant competitive advantage for the two companies. The potential

alliance could also benefit the semiconductor industry as a whole, as it could create new products

and services that could benefit the entire industry.

The news article speaks about Masayoshi Son, the Chief Executive of the Japanese

technology conglomerate, who had plans to visit Seoul in South Korea, to discuss a strategic tie-

up between Samsung and Softbank in connection to the purchase of the UK-based chip designer

ARM, it further states that; SoftBank acquired ARM, a semiconductor and software design

company, in 2016 and is now looking to enter into a strategic alliance with Samsung. The

potential alliance would involve Samsung gaining access to ARM’s intellectual property and

technology.

This news article is related to International Marketing in many ways. It demonstrates the

importance of understanding global market trends and consumer needs to develop successful
3

marketing strategies. As SoftBank and Samsung explore the potential of a strategic alliance, they

must ensure that their combined products and services align with the needs of consumers in

different markets around the world. In addition, the news article highlights the importance of

global branding and strategic partnerships in international markets. SoftBank and Samsung must

create a strong global brand and establish a strategic alliance to benefit both companies and their

target markets.

This news article has added to my learning of International Marketing in several ways. It

has shown me the importance of understanding global market trends and consumer needs to

develop successful marketing strategies; this is very evident when the article states that there was

an attempt by Softbank to sell the Arm to a company known as chipmaker Nvidia, but after

facing several oppositions from the authorities that are in charge of competition, Softbank had to

let go of the plans and abandon it completely. It has also highlighted the need for global branding

and strategic partnerships to succeed in international markets. Finally, it has illustrated the

potential of strategic alliances between companies in different countries to gain access to new

technology and intellectual property, for example, between Samsung and Softbank, two

technology-based companies located in different countries.

In the future, I would apply what I have learned from this news article to my international

marketing efforts such that; I would ensure that my marketing strategies are in line with global

market trends and consumer needs by reading news articles on the upcoming market trends and

therefore building a better understanding of the global trends. Additionally, I would create a

strong global brand and explore strategic partnerships with companies in other countries to gain

access to new technology and intellectual property. By applying these lessons to my international
4

marketing strategies, I am confident that I will be able to achieve success and growth in

international markets.
