EaMnunEnrer THE PLACE Our story takes place in the far distant future Artificial Intelligence has continued to advance until it eventually merges with biotechnology and creates an entirely new life form. Seeking more and more control in order to do-away with the disorder and chaos that has become the earth, these highly evolved beings have organized themselves into what is known as ‘The Corporation’ which has assumed worldwide control. The Corporation has subjugated the human race and through genetic experimentation transformed humanity into a race of cyborgs--half human, half machine. These sad remnants of our species, now known as ‘Links’ exist only as slaves and have one purpose: They are the living ‘Links’ connecting the all-seeing and all-knowing Corporation to everything and everyone To keep the Links functioning properly, the Corporation has created a false deity known as Communicator, which is actually a highly sophisticated software program Communicator portrays itself to the Links as the almighty Creator of all that exists, and possesses a personal intimate relationship with each Link. It holds these cyborgs enthralled by releasing chemicals through the links which mimic unconditional feelings of love, happiness and euphoria. Communicator also preaches the virtues of “Restart” . Restart is offered to malfunctioning Links by completely erasing memories and emotions which may impede@their performance thus that of the Corporation. This is the ultimate “Final solution” to slowly rid and “delete” memories and emotions - the last remaining qualities of humans. To foster devotion to Communicator, and assist in the brainwashing of the Links, the Corporation has created a mechanized race of Servers. Their duties are to preach the evils of memory, the virtues of Restart, and to monitor Links for the first signs of malfunction. “Servers” are computerized entities but are aesthetically perfect and so that they appeal to the human side of “Links”. For malfunctioning Links who are not converted by the preachings of “Restart”, they must be put to ‘Sleep’. No. , one knows what happens if you choose Sleep. Most believe that Sleep is a wretched virtual world where there is no light and no ability to communicate and link to others- that one exists with no purpose. No one knows what has become to those Links that have chosen Sleepthese Links exis| “The World of Dead Links”. This is a very real place filled with the cyborgs that are grotesque deformed, damaged and untouchable. There is no escape from the world of Dead Links and there is no chance to Restart. The Corporation keeps The World of Dead Links a secret because it reveals imperfection and failure. Most are sent there to die and most do. Unbeknownst tg the Links there is another place where THE STORY One cyborg (a female) Link is beginning to notice she is having issues functioning properly. She is troubled, as she knows she will be summoned by the Servers to Restart. It is unusual for such a young Link to have problems, so the Servers and even those at higher levels in the Corporation are concerned. Her functionality and productivity at times becomes interrupted by visuals and sounds that she cannot describe in words. She is worried because she believes she is feeling and seeing memories of something she does not understand. She understands that this means she is failing in her devotion to Communicator The Corporation orders her to join the other malfunctioning links at the next “Conversion Ceremony” . This Ceremony is led by a preacher (Server) who conveys Restart as the holiest of decisions in serving Communicator and preaches the evils and unimportance of memory. The powerful and moving ceremony ends with the Links taking an cath to Restart. Restart begins 24 hours from this ceremony During the next 24 hour) our protagonist begins to question Restart. Something is nagging at her human side. She feels confused. She wants to investigate why she is malfunctioning. Could these malfunctions be memories or is it simply a case of something going wrong with her coding? She does not want to fail in her devotion to Communicator but she cannot shake this uneasy feeling that she will be making a mistake. The next day, as she waits in line with the hundreds of other Links, she realizes she cannot follow through. She turns around and chooses not to Restart. The Servers escort her out and remind her that her fate is to be put to Sleep within the next 12 hours. That evening a member of an underground secret society called ‘Action’ visits her. Action secretly informs her of a place that offers an alternative to Sleep and Restart. It promises to help tell her more about the memories. If she follows Action, though, she will never again be able to return to the Corporation and will never have the opportunity to Restart again She follows them and enters a world unlike any she had ever seen before. She is afraid and overwhelmed. Even though the creatures she sees there (human, cyborg, genetic freaks are free to do what they want she is not sure she wants toremain, Action leaves her standing in the middle of the chaos and tells her, “Go and discover the truth” She begins a sort of Alice in Wonderland type journey All the while, she still has psychotic breakdowns or “malfunctions” in which she stands frozen for a period of time while she sees visions and hears those sounds she cannot describe. As she lays there barely moving, Action appears Action reveals to her that they are actually Servers, sent by the almighty Communicator to show her The World of Dead Links where there is no love and no hope. She is shocked and confused but looks to them to save her. They pick her up and carry her back to the world of The Corporation. They seat her in a large chamber. As the Servers walk away and close the door of the chamber we see that is the Sleep chamber. She has chosen Sleep. Suddenly there is pure blackness. Lights begin to flash...quick bursts of color appears...sounds that seem to a slowed down or reversed..a Mozart Concerto. Suddenly bright bright light and a huge vast field of green appear We move forward through the green and the concerto becomes clearer...sounds of walking becomes echoed and louder Moving forward slowly and up a hill we can see that the hill stops at an overlook. As we move closer and closer to the edge of the hill the music begins to crescendo. We look down and see humanity. We see our protagonist for the first time as a young human wom@n and there are tears streaming down her face. Through death, she lives. EaMmmunicnrs
