earlier than non-smokers as a result.
Smoking is the leading cause of fatal illnesses such as lung cancer and heart disease.
Addiction to smoking also increases the risk of addiction to drugs. People who smoke
are 8 times more likely to use marijuana and 22 times more likely to use cocaine.

“ PRACTICE 1

A rna is excited about the weekend. She and her friends have decided to meet ai the
neighbourhood playground. She has not seen them in a long time because she has been
away at a school camp. However. when she arrives, her excitement dissipates. She is
deeply shocked to see the sorrowful condition ot’ the playground.
The grass in the area has not been cut and there are broken glass bottles scattered
around. The rubbish bins have not been cleared for a long time so they are overflowing
with days-old rubbish. The playground equipment is in a sorry state as well. The chains
of the swings are loose and there is a huge hole in the middle of the slide.
Aina works hard with her friends to clean up the playground, starting with the
broken glass bottles that could easily injure someone. She believes that everyone in the
neighbourhood has a v’ital role to play in keeping the playground clean and saf’e.
Parents should advise their children to use public property responsibly. They should also
teach their children to throw their rubbish in the bins provided. Neighbourhood clean-ups
should be organised regularly in an effort to keep the playground in good condition.

Six sentences have been removed from the following text. Choose from the sentences
(A — 11) to fit each gap (1 - 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need
to use. For each question, write the correct answer (A - H) in the space provided.

One of Malaysia’s many unique traditions is having an open house. During festivals
such as Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali, visitors are welcome to the feasts hosted by
local
dignitaries as well as the homes of ordinary Malaysians. ' The event is open
not only to family and friends, but also complete strangers. 2
It is important for visitors to observe the rules of etiquette when attending an open
house. 3 It is polite to stop by any time from 5 minutes after the designated
start time to 30 minutes before the slated finish time. It is also customary to remove
your shoes before entering a home. This may not be necessary if the event is held at a
community centre. When visiting a home, you should address older men as ‘Uncle’
and older women as ‘Auntie’. If the host is Muslim, males and females sometimes do
not shake hands. If you
are male, you should wait and see whether the female proffers her hand. 4
It is good manners to queue up for the food at an open house. You should never push
and shove others in the queue. Neither should you overload your plate, which is a
sign of
5
greed.
You may wish to give a token of thanks to your host. If you do, you should be
aware of the taboos for each community. For example, you should not give a
Chinese host
handkerchiefs, sandals or sharp objects as a gift. 6

A An open house usually has fixed hours.

B An open house hosted by a dignitary typically takes place at a community centre
rather than his or her home.
c You should arrive on time.
D At an open house, plenty of food and drinks are
served. E If she does not, a polite nod and smile will
do.
F However, it is perfectly normal to have a second helping.
You might hurt their feelings.
