DIRECWAY ®
System Bandwidth Management
and Satellite Link Features

DIRECWAY® 5-1
OBJECTIVES

• Describe DW outroute bandwidth management feature

• Explain DW inroute bandwidth management feature

BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW

NOC

Best effort service

No guaranteed bandwidth

• DIRECWAY is based on a network resource sharing concept

• Normally, all remotes are considered to have best effort service in both the outroute and
inroute directions

• The Fair Access Policy (FAP) feature can be implemented to tune the outroute throughput
for individual remotes based on their service plans

• The Inroute Quality Service (IQoS) feature can be implemented to provide dedicated inroute
bandwidth for a group of remotes

FAIR ACCESS POLICY

Service Plan

NOC CIR=56kbps Remote

• DIRECWAY Fair Access Policy can be enabled to provide equal access to all remotes.
• Each remote is assigned to a Service Plan
– Each Service Plan will specify the level of throughput
• The NOC will keep track of the average data rate allowed by the service agreement for that
user and try to maintain a running average of the user’s total throughput
– If the user exceeds its average data rate, the link will be adjusted to reduce the
throughput

INROUTE 11
INROUTE 5

• The system can guarantee the availability of inroute bandwidth to eligible sites
– Inroutes are configured in groups and the remotes are assigned to a group
– Prioritization can be configured in each group
• 4 levels of prioritization
• Spoofed and un-spoofed traffic
• Remotes not assigned to a IQOS will use the common bandwidth

INROUTE GROUP

Outroute Inroute Inroute

Group 1 Group 2

• Inroutes are organized into inroute groups

– All inroutes in an inroute group share some common characteristics, such as same
symbol rate, same Aloha size, and so on

• One inroute group can contain up to 32 inroutes

• Each inroute group must contain Aloha channels, stream slots, and a set of ranging
channels

IQoS PLAN

• DIRECWAY can guarantee the availability

of inroute bandwidth to eligible sites
through the Inroute Quality of Service
Bandwidth for Inroute Group “1” = 2000 kbps (IQoS) feature

• The IQoS plan is used to define the

IQoS “1” IQoS “2”
512 kbps 1000 kbps guaranteed inroute bandwidth
– Guaranteed inroute bandwidth in
the IQoS plan comes from an
inroute group
Guaranteed
– IQoS plan is then assigned to
minimum
eligible remotes
bandwidth for a
group of
remotes • The IQoS plan is also used to provide the
guaranteed inroute bandwidth for up to 4
traffic prioritizations
– Supports real-time applications like
VoIP
