● Conservation - The act of trying to protect or preserve something or the limiting of how much of a resource
you use is called conservation. Conserving the unprotected architectural heritage and sites ensures the survival
of the country's sense of place and its character in a globalising environment. It offers the opportunity not only
to conserve the past, but also to define the future.
● Heritage - A property that is or may be inherited refers to the term ‘Heritage’ (Inheritance). It is the background
from which one comes, or any sort of inherited property or goods , the full range of our inherited traditions,
monuments, objects, and culture. Most important, it is the range of contemporary activities, meanings, and
behaviors that we draw from them.
● Preservation - To protect and keep something safe from injury, harm, or destruction, to keep alive, intact, or
free from decay, maintaining it ,to keep or save from decomposition for the future is called preservation.
● Revitalization - The action or the process of imbuing something with new life ,vitality, energy , vigor and to
restore something that has lost its activity or its health means to make it active or healthy again is called
revitalization.
● Rehabiltalization - The noun rehabilitation comes from the Latin prefix re-, meaning “again” and habitare,
meaning “make fit.” When something falls into disrepair and needs to be restored to a better condition, it needs
rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is the act of restoring something to its original state, to return something to a
healthy or usual condition and to good condition.
● Maintenance - The process of preserving , a condition or situation or the state of being preserved and the work
needed to keep something in good condition by checking it regularly and repairing it when necessary is called
maintenance.
● Adaptation - The act or process of changing to better suit a situation and that helps something to survive ,
function and adjust better in its environmental condition is called adaptation.
● UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialised
agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through international cooperation in
education, arts, sciences, and culture and has worked to preserve culture, improve education, increase scientific
collaboration, encourage freedom of information, bring people together, eradicate poverty and promote the
democratic values. It has also played a significant role in preservation of Indian culture and heritage.
● William Morris - William Morris was a British textile designer, poet, artist, novelist, architectural
conservationist, printer, translator and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement.
William Morris , along with William Morris, Philip Webb and others in 1877 found ‘The Society for the
Protection of Ancient Buildings’ (SPAB) (also known as Anti-Scrape) to oppose what they saw as destructive
'restoration' of ancient buildings then occurring in Victorian England; 'ancient' being used in the wider sense of
'very old' rather than the more usual modern one of 'pre-medieval'. Morris is recognised as one of the most
significant cultural figures of Victorian Britain.
● Repair - To restore something that is damaged, decayed, faulty, or worn to a sound or a healthy state and to a
good condition by mending and fixing it is called repair.
● Emotional Value - Emotional value is the economic worth of feelings. It makes something feel like a better
version of compared to how it was before. It requires key skills such as listening, being authentic, being
empathetic, being transparent, and creating a connection with something. Through emotional values, something
can be taken care of without harming them.
● Old - Something that has lived for a long time and no longer young, that belongs from a period in the past and
has existed for many years defines a particular subject as ‘Old’.
● Protection - A legal or other formal measures intended to preserve something from injury or harm and the act
of keeping something safe from injury, damage, or loss is called protection.
● Material - the matter from which a physical substance can be made from that have qualities that allows it to be
used to make other things is called material.
● Integrity - The firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values , incorruptibility, unimpaired
condition , soundness or the quality or state of being complete or undivided or the completeness of something is
called integrity.

All these terminologies as a whole define the term ‘Architectural / Heritage conservation’ that describes the process
which material, historical and design durability of mankind's built architectural history is prolonged to last longer and
to be able to sustain difficult conditions or to be kept sustainable.
