Procedures and Techniques

Materials Used:
1. Meter Stick
2. Balance Beam
3. Vial of salt
4. Small test tube
5. Medium test tube
6. 250 mL beaker
7. 250 mL flask
8. 100 mL graduated cylinder
9. Burner
10. Glass
11. Triangular file

Chemicals Used:
1. Water (H2O)
2. Methane: Causes harm to all senses due to overexposure and could
be fatal.
3. Carbon Dioxide: High concentrations causes unconsciousness or
death. Lower will injure most senses.

Procedures:
1. Measured the length and width of the outlined box using a meter
stick.
2. Weighed the vial of salt using the balance beam
3. Filled the small (10cm) and medium (15cm) test tubes with water.
4. Filled the beaker and flask with 50 mL of water each
5. Poured water from the beaker into a 100 mL graduated cylinder to
get the actual volume.
6. Poured water from the flask into a 100 mL graduated cylinder to get
the actual volume
7. Connected burner hose to the burner inlet on the bunsen burner
8. Connected the other end to the outlet by the sink
9. We turned the gas on and lit the burner using a striker
10. Then we turned the gas off
11. Measured 18cm of glass using a meter stick and marked it
12. Filed where we made the 18cm mark and broke the glass at the line
13. We turned the burner on again and placed the end of the glass that
we cut into the fire
14. After rolling the glass back and forth in the fire, we put the piece of
glass on the inspection pad.
15. Once the glass was finished cooling, we polished the other side the
same way we did the first one.
16. We cut another piece of glass like the 18cm piece.
17. We used the burner to heat the middle of the glass evenly by
rotating the glass slowly over the fire.
18. Once the glass was soft enough to bend, we curved it into a 90-
degree angle.
19. We let the glass finish cooling.
20. Gathered all supplies and cleaned up lab area.

Data:
1. The length of the outlined area is 8.25 cm, and the width is 1.04 cm.
2. The mass of the vial and salt is 15.824 g
3. The volume of the small tube is 9.2 mL
4. The volume of the medium tube is 23 mL
5. The actual volume of the beaker is 30.4 mL
6. The actual volume of the flask 40.8 mL
7. The percentage error of the beaker is 64%
8. The percentage error of the flask is 23%

Results: The experiment concluded with all the procedures finished. As a

result, we have grasped the techniques that were used. However, some of
our results were not as precise as we thought.

Conclusion: The experiment was a success. We completed each procedure

without many complications. Though, at the end of the experiment we
were having trouble softening the glass so that we could bend it into a 90-
degree angle. Once it was soft enough, it was not bent to an exact 90-
degree angle. It was 87 degrees.
