financing, managing risk, Government Relations, branding, and operations management.
Classes will involve the application of these concepts in an experiential case-based discussion and debate

COURSE OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course the students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. Analyze multiple high-level real-life business scenarios and build cases for determining the best
strategic options and an ultimate recommendation.

COURSE NAME: Cases in Global Business Management

PAGE: 2
COURSE CODE: HOST4113
2. Recommend expansion strategies for regional and international growth, based on cost/benefit
analysis, financial statements and ratios, strategy tools, and analysis of a rapidly globalizing
industry, and sub-national, national and global competition as well as competitive advantage.
Determine future development directions amidst fierce industry competition. Analyze if or how
standardized management can effectively seed expansion.

3. Explore how strategy can be used to shape industry structure and market space, and the
importance of linking technology to value. Understand that businesses go through ups and downs,
and that in an up-phase continually value innovating is as important as in a down-phase. Consider
the importance of long-term growth, balancing and planning a product portfolio for the right
balance between earnings and growth.

4. Execute business analysis and valuation of a beverage industry player and its competitors.
Conduct financial statement analysis using four steps: business strategy analysis, accounting
analysis, financial analysis, and prospective analysis.

5. Develop an understanding of franchising as a means of market penetration and as a source of

financial and other resources, particularly for new ventures. Examine the early evolution of two
business opportunities and the development of a growth strategy.

6. Analyze global strategy choices through a lens of centralization/decentralization, headquarter-

subsidiary negotiation and utilized the AAA and Integration/Responsiveness Frameworks.

7. Determine plausible best courses of action for financing expansion strategies (organic growth,
franchising, or hybrid means) for an entrepreneurial scenario based on quantitative and qualitative
analysis.

DELIVERY METHODS / LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

This course will be delivered using the problem-based learning approach. Students will be presented with
cases and will be asked to identify the key issues and problems based on the information provided.
Working alone or in small groups, students will be guided to solve these problems and decide on the best
solutions through research and in-class and online discussions and debate.

LIST OF REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Class materials, articles and case studies are listed under the next section, REQUIRED
BACKGROUND MATERIALS – ARTICLES AND CASE STUDIES FOR INDIVIDUAL AND

Guidelines
Simple Guidelines for Writing Case Study Analysis (questmeraki.com)

Some additional notes on writing a case study analysis:

 Use both qualitative and quantitative analysis as required.
 Please use you own words and analysis as much as possible.
 Refer to concepts and principles from previous course materials.
 Peer-reviewed research will be necessary to defend and supplement all work.
 Always include an introduction and conclusion along with the body of your paper.
 Do not look past the date of the case when researching.
 Take care not to access case solutions online. Plagiarism will incur an automatic fail.

CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENTS:

Case studies are group assignments except for the last individual case. They require a paper (in MS
Word) and a presentation (in MS Powerpoit).
Case study presentations will be given online, twice synchronously and twice asynchronously.
Synchronous presentations will require participation. This means as presenters you will have to
host a Q & A and as an audience member you will have to pose questions and challenge presenters
options and recommendations (see Evaluation System). If you are unable to join a synchronous
session you may make your portion a narrated MS Powerpoint and conduct a Q&A in an online
discussion board.
When you are presenting asynchronously you will conduct a Q&A with a pre-set sister group on a
Discussion Board. Each group member individually is responsible to ask and answer a question.
