SDOIC journ team goes virtual,

attributes success to careful planning
Guided by the theme "Surfing over the waves of
misinformation and disinformation and its
monstrosity through responsible and credible
campus journalism", Division of Imus City, through
the help of City of Imus Association of School Paper
Advisers (CIASPA), took on the challenge to hold its
campus journalism activities virtually to continue
upholding purposive and responsible campus
journalism even amid the pandemic.

Dr. Leticia A. Rogacion, Education Program

Supervisor in English and Campus Journalism,
shared how careful planning helped in redefining
the guidelines according to the local context.

"Through the help of CIASPA's benchmarking, we

were able to carefully craft the guidelines for our
simulation, press conference proper, and even the
cliniquing, so all our participants would be guided,"
Rogacion said.

Melanie Mae N. Moreno, CIASPA President, in

addition, recalled initially hosting a simulation virtual
press conference as a response to her observations
with other divisions' usage of digital platforms in
press conferences.

"Having been part of numerous virtual activities in

and out campus journalism the entire pandemic
showed me how technology could really be
challenging in achieving the goals of any event, so it
was a great move for the division to have planned
out a simulation conference before the contest
proper," Moreno shared.

She added that meetings and consultations were

done with the body in order to maintain the smooth
flow of the activities.

Dubbed as "Team Resback Imus City", the division

campus journalism core team and its members
utilized a Facebook group from which
announcements and reminders were regularly
posted. It also became the platform for queries,
clarifications, and suggestions.

After the press conference proper, division trainers

used various platforms in programming their training
as Google classroom, FB Learning Community, etc.

"Mas gusto ko ang naging sistema ngayon kasi kahit

na mahirap, naging smooth at coordinated ang lahat
ng mga kilos ng tao lalong lalo na sa part ng mga
trainers kasi mayroon talaga kaming mga kanya-
kanyang facilitators," Maricris Galan, school paper
adviser and division trainer, said.

-Conflict schedule of training to other activities

-Most of the trainees were very participative and active

during the training.

Strengths -90% of the journalists were able to comply and submit

their output in all the activities provided by the trainers.

-Unstable internet connection

Challenges -Incomplete attendance of

the trainees; conflict
schedule due to other school related activities

-The trainers gave ample time to the trainees in

submitting their output

Interventions
-Facilitators called the attention of the journalist who
weren't able to attend the training.

With only a few days remaining prior to the conduct of the Regional Schools Press
Conference, the Science Writing Team composed of 2 trainers, 4 facilitators and 16
student-journalists trainees planned to maximize the allotted days to training by
teaching the four writing formats/genres used in Science Writing coupled with
outputs and critiquing right after each activity. The trainers will be assigned to 2

formats each to give ample time for preparation and familiarization to the genres.
Journalists would also be tasked to revise their outputs based on the
Training Plan judges/trainers feedback and suggestions. They would also be encouraged to
read more on different science related news and documentaries so to be abreast
with the latest happenings and discoveries.

among the challenges faced during the

other connectivity difficulties. Despite these
obstacles, the simulation became a helpful
avenue as it helped to clarify the dos and

During the event, all clarifications and

concerns were resolved to assure that it
would not happen on the actual DSPC.

COLUMN WRITING/PAGSULAT NG KOLUM DIVISION OF IMUS CITY

As a showcase of thoughts and personalities of the columnists in a publication, the main goal of the cliniquing
for column writers in the Division of Imus City is to help them find and communicate their voice as a hybrid of
verified information and their experiences and observations. In the age when misinformation and
disinformation are pervasive, it is important for columnists to develop an opinion grounded on facts that will
persuade readers to take part in an action.

Construct an opinion article to persuade readers to take a side of an issue

using strong rhetoric through the different modes of persuasion;
Objectives

in writing an opinion piece;
Establish a clear and coherent structure
Write short commentaries as a reaction or a critique to a given opinion piece.

Students had hasty generalizations due to insufficient exposure to

information.
Students tend to begin their columns with the general idea/news peg which
Weaknesses leads to writing an uninteresting lead and angle.

Some outputs had missing thesis statement/statement of position.

(from Day 1) Elementary students writing in English need to improve in grammar and
writing different sentence structures.
Some students tend to propose one-sided solutions. Macro-context of
issues need to be emphasized.

High School Students have a good command of the English and Filipino
language. They are also able to communicate their personality in their
columns and develop their own writing style. Code-switching is observed.
Strengths

The students come up with interesting,
catchy headlines.
Most students are able to follow the column writing format given (from
personal to macro-context).

Some participants had difficulties attending the workshops while

accomplishing tasks in school.

Challenges

Students lack the experience or exposure to current issues that they

can use in writing anecdotes, personal observations, etc.

A Facebook group was created for announcements, posting of readings,

and critiquing of outputs.
The trainer provided asynchronous activities; students accomplished

Interventions the tasks at their convenience.

One-on-one critiquing of outputs is done synchronously.

The trainer commented on each student output through Google Docs.
All students were encouraged to see the comments on others' outputs.

SIMULATION

Column Writing Facilitators Charina Arandez

and Mariz Geraldine Jose led the simulation for
the Division Schools Press Conference. 35
students attended the activity. The infographics
and guidelines provided by Ms. Melanie Moreno,
CIASPA President, had been helpful to the
trainer, facilitators and student-participants.

CONTEST PROPER

My lecture on column writing during the DSPC 2022

focused on writing an editorial column, a personal
column with structure similar to editorial. After reading all
the submitted outputs, I observed that many participants
were able to follow the structure that I presented. The
students needed to improve their note-taking skills and
the integration of their personal experiences and
observation with the current issue given.

CLINIQUING

We find the conduct of asynchronous

tasks effective and efficient with the
trainer giving constructive feedbacks on
each output submitted. We also receive
more and well-written responses from
the students through Facebook posts on
the official Facebook group.

CLINIQUING

The cliniquing in Column Writing went

smoothly. The workshops focused on
reading published column articles with the
students and trainer as critiques. Students
were trained to evaluate given columns
and their own write-ups using the criteria
provided by the regional office. I
acknowledge that the students developed
their writing style which is the main goal in
writing personal opinion piece.
