a. You should add because the word sold is in the problem.
b. You should subtract because the word sold is in the problem.
c. You should add because you know how many were sold each week and you need to combine them to find out
how many total shirts were sold.
d. You should subtract because you can’t have more than 455 shirts.

Football Fun Answer Key

1. Jonathan was given the following problem:

The Gators scored 30 points in the first half of the game against the Eagles. At the end of the
game, the Gators had scored a total of 65 points. How many points did the Gators score in the
second half of the game?

He added 30 + 65 = 95 and said the Gators scored 95 points during the second half.

Do you agree or disagree with Jonathan? __No________________

Explain your answer: Answers may vary.

Sample Correct Response: This is a part-part whole problem. I was given the first half of the game, which is a part. I was also given
the total points scored, which is the whole. I am missing the other part, so I need to subtract. Jonathan should have subtracted 65 – 30
and determined that the Gators scored 35 points during the second half of the game.

2. Ms. Steffen was told that the Armwood Hawks scored 53 points and the Riverview Sharks only scored 27
points. She needed to find out how many more points the Hawks scored. Ms. Steffen did the following
subtraction problem to find the difference.

53
−¿27
34
She is not correct. Where did she make her mistake? Ms. Steffen was supposed to take 7 ones away from 3 ones. She
couldn’t do that so she should have traded a ten for 10 ones. Then she would have 4 tens and 13 ones. After that she could subtract 7
ones from 13 ones and get 6 ones. Then she would take two tens from the 4 tens you still have and get 2 tens. So the difference is 26.
The Hawks scored 26 more points than the Sharks scored. (Student may also mention that Ms. Steffen subtracted 3 ones from 7 ones
instead of trying to subtract 7 ones from 3 ones and needing to regroup.)

What answer should Ms. Steffen have gotten? 26

3. The Bucs stadium sold 455 Bucs T-shirts during their first game. They sold 376 shirts during the
second week. How many shirts were sold during the two weeks?

What operation should you do to solve the problem?

a. You should add because the word sold is in the problem.
b. You should subtract because the word sold is in the problem.
c. You should add because you know how many were sold each week and you need to combine them to find out
how many total shirts were sold.
d. You should subtract because you can’t have more than 455 shirts.

How many shirts did the Bucs Stadium sell in the two weeks? 831 shirts
4. Which of the following word problems could be solved by adding 267 + 123?

You may choose more than one answer.

e. There were 267 adults and 123 kids at the Lennard Longhorns football game. How many people were at
the Lennard Longhorn game?
f. There were 267 kids in the cafeteria. 123 of them were girls. How many were boys?
g. There were 267 kids in the cafeteria. 123 of them had to go back to class. How many kids were in the
cafeteria now?

Reddick. How many 3rd graders are at Reddick?

5. Complete the pattern. How did you decide what came next?

100, 195, 290, 385, ______

e. 485 because they are adding 100 each time

f. 480 because they are adding 95 each time
g. 285 because they are subtracting 100 each time
h. 290 because they are subtracting 95 each time

6. Mrs. Dabbs was told to estimate to solve this problem.

There were 879 people at the Lennard Longhorns football game before halftime. After halftime, 215
people left. ABOUT how many people were still at the game?

She did the problem:

879
−¿215
664
Mr. Kelly told her that her answer was not correct. What mistake did she make?

Mrs. Dabbs is not correct because she did the subtraction problem. She did not estimate. She should have rounded 879 to the nearest
hundred and found it was close to 900. She should have rounded 215 to the nearest hundred and found it as close to 200. Then she
would subtract 900 – 200 and get 700. So, there were ABOUT 700 people still at the game.__
