Hello everyone, today I will introduce the part of the lecture which is the modality of

hair.
The hair can be regard as a text as being socially constructed to have meanings to
create identity or impression. Visual communication is a perceived reality.So the
represent of hair is not concerned with how true something is, but ‘as how true’
something is represented and perceived within a social group, we present how hair
looks like true. The modality of value divides to lowest modality, low modality and
high modality.
This standard is determined by how a social group accepts them. It has nine modality
markers for hair. The color saturation deal with the range from natural tones to
amazing or fashion colors. Color differentiation with the scale from one color to
many colors. colour modulation refers to the variation of colour used – whether the
colours are flat or whether they are variegated;. And illumination deals with the
range from dull to super glossy;Brightness and contrast means the contrast of hair’s
different colors. These markers for hair have some similarities as validity we learned
before. height deals with the scale from flat to erect. fall deals with the scale with
elevation and any movements. texture is concerned with a scale from solid to
exploded. Finally, contextualization could include the use of hair accessories.

Therefore, we can use these systems to analyse with images. In the first image we
can see the woman's hair is black but with pink strings braided into an exaggerated
hairstyle tied on top of her head and without any particular contrast in brightness. By
using styling products technology, this hairstyle is less nature daily in terms of
naturalistic coding orientation, so it is lowest modality. And in second image, This
woman's hair is colored, with eight colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple,
pink and gold and her hair looks silky, shiny and has shaded contrast. The hair at the
bottom of the picture is darker and the top of the hair is brighter due to the light. Her
hair is batched down, but the burn has been kept curved by a perm. Regarding
contextualization, this picture is not wearing any decoration. In terms of naturalistic
coding orientation, the hair in this picture has undergone some technological
processing, but it is still not natural enough. So it is low modality. In the last image,
The hair within the last photo is only a natural brown tone, it is straight and smooth
down, there is no particular contrast in light, but you can see the contrast in
shadows, the sides are a little lighter in light and the top of the head and shoulders
are darker. The texture is solid and the curvature of the hair is natural, without any
curvature or decoration. So it is the most real of three images, it is high modality.

Because the people frequently switch coding orientations owing to the various social
situations and roles in which they find themselves. I introduced above the standard
of naturalistic coding orientation. In some parties, theater or hair shows, The
standard for a haircut is usually exaggerated and fantasy, with rich contrasting colors,
a pronounced curvature of the hair and a variety of accessories, like the one
presented in this picture. The use of blue and white color and the variation of the
curves to create a flower look. Therefore, in this abstract coding orientation, this type
of hair is high modality.

This image I introduce before, it is low modality in naturalistic coding orientation but
it is high modality in sense coding orientation. It stimulates another sense besides
the visual by using fashionable colors and super glossy hair to attract the viewer's
desire to touch.

Finally, the modality of hair follows part of Kress and Van Leeuwen's validity system
and coding orientation classification and extends the new analysis system based on
it.The modality of hair suggests that meaning and reality can also be constructed
through other means of communication. hair can also be defined as a linguistic
symbol to analyze texts and views, conveying different messages and meanings to
people to determine its value.
