THE RELATIONSHIP OF SELF-CONFIDENCE TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS IN ANAPOG INTERGRATED SCHOOL

S.Y. 2022-2023
Background to the Study

Self-esteem is a life skill that is highly embraced by all societies at all stages of development. It
is the process by Which individuals rate themselves, acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to
enable them participate effectively in the society. According to Kholode (2009), self-esteem
education somehow determines the level of prosperity, welfare and security of people. It is the
cornerstone of economic, social development and a principle means of improving the welfare of
individuals. In his study on the influence of self- esteem on the study habits of students in
America, Miller (2002) points out that, high school learners need to accept and value themselves
to do well in their academic work. In his study on the factors influencing students’ academic
performance in New York, James (2004) points out that academic performance is use of one’s
aptitude in studying and making accomplishments and achievements in terms transfer of
knowledge, communication skills negotiation skills and good grades and marks in examinations.
Also, in his study on the challenges facing high school education in Tanzania, Robert (2008)
emphasizes that provision of education in East Africa has been faced with numerous challenges,
for instance poor academic performance among learners. Robert (2008) opines that Poor
academic performance leads to students’ frustration and this can lead to negative self-esteem
among learners which can later impact negatively on the economy of a country. It also causes
psychological suffering to parents if they have to pay more money to take their children to other
schools. According to KIE (2008), education is activated through the cognitive, psychomotor
and the affective domain. The affective domain in enhanced through life skills education, self-
esteem being one of the skills. The development of life skills is a life-long process that starts in
early childhood and continues throughout one’s life. Life skills education enables students to
develop positive attitude towards self and others by transforming knowledge, skills and values
into action .This enhances students’ abilities to make effective decisions and relate amicably with
others in society. The three major categories of life skills: skills of knowing and living with
oneself that include self-awareness, self-esteem, coping with emotions and coping with
stress .There is the skill Of knowing and living with others and that of making effective
decisions. Where life skills education is well developed and practiced it can enhance the well
being of society and promote positive outlook and healthy behavior among learners (KIE, 2006).

,REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

 The Concept of Self-Esteem

Academic success is another source of self-esteem. Academic success improves one's a
feeling of competence and worth. Academic success and self-esteem appear to be most
highly valued between the ages of around seven and fifteen (Malbi & Reasoner, 2000).
Several academics have suggested that towards the late high school years, the importance of
academic accomplishment decreases and the following years (Malbi & Reasoner , 2000).
One of the psychological concepts that has generated the most research and, as a result, has
received the greatest attention is self-esteem. According to statistical analysis on Wikipedia,
self-esteem is one of the most often discussed topics in psychological literature that has been
employed in psychology study. One of the social psychology topics that is still the most
commonly studied is self-esteem (Wells & Marwell, 1976).
In the study of psychology, one's self-concept is a significant factor in determining behavior.
Self-concept is the knowledge of oneself as understood by the context to which one belongs.
It is typically made up of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that one associates with
themselves. A person's perception of themselves fluctuates from situation to scenario and is
dependent on how they feel about themselves or how they perceive others. These ideas are
primarily influenced by a variety of elements, including behavior attributions,
reinforcements, and significant other evaluation. It clings as reference points about himself: a
collection of traits, qualities, and flaws. He views relationships, values, and one's capacities
as indicators of one's identity (Nalah, 2014).
Self-esteem is viewed as a gauge of one's. How much someone values, accepts, values,
prizes, or whether he or she is liked (Adler and Stewart, 2004). According to Rosenberg
(1965), a self-esteem expert, self-esteem merely one's perspective on themselves. He
explained it as a "positive or negative attitude about oneself."
High self-esteem has been linked to success in school, in relationships, and in other areas,
according to research and individual accountability (Redenbach, 1991). The maturation of
the entire human potential for persons of all ages. Positive self-esteem increases as potential.
When all people are accepted and their individual and collective contributions are
acknowledged and celebrated, especially in a multi-culturally diverse environment, high self-
esteem might start to grow (Redenback, 1991, p. 25). The one essential component that has
the biggest impact on one's level of competence across all endeavors is self-esteem. Job
success, academic performance, interpersonal compatibility, and general happiness have all
been linked to self-esteem (Redenbach, 1991).
Kaur et al. (2009) stated that self-concept has three main elements: self-image or self-identity
of an individual, self-esteem, or the worth a person instills on himself/herself; and behavior
component wherein self-concept influences and forms the behavior of a person. Self-concept
is distinguishable from self-esteem, which refers to the degree to which self-learning is
characterized, predictable, and pertinent to one's states of mind and attitudes. Self-idea
likewise varies from confidence: self-concept is a psychological or unmistakable segment of
one's self (e.g., "I am a quick sprinter"), while self-esteem is opinionated and evaluative (e.g.,
"I like being a quick sprinter") (Ayduk, Gyurak, & Luerssen, 2009). Dambudzo (2009)
emphasized the importance of academic performance and self-concept as essential for
rehabilitating students that may be victims of their undesirable concepts regarding
themselves. A study entitled "A Study of Self-Concept concerning Academic performance
among 9th Standard Student" was conducted by Murugan and Jebaraj (2017). The specific
requirements for arranging these spectacles of self-concept in connection to academic
performance as a typical and unsurprising crucial consequence of the student development
and advancement as opposed to among enthusiastic manifestation. The self-concept in
connection to academic performance ends up being essential in the activities of an individual.
As the students are the stakes of future generations, their self-concept pattern concerning
academic performance is significant.
According to Kaur et al. (2009), self-concept is made up of three primary components: an
individual's self-image or self-identity. Self-esteem is the value a person places in
themselves. Self-concept influences behavior through the self-esteem component and shapes
a person's behavior. Self-concept can be distinguished from self-esteem, which is the extent
to which where in self-learning is identifiable, predictable, and relevant to one's mental and
behavioral conditions. Self-idea as well self-concept is a psychological or obvious aspect of
one's self, as opposed to confidence (for example, "I move swiftly self-esteem is subjective
and evaluative (e.g., "I like being a quick sprinter"), whereas self worth is objective "(Ayduk
Gyurak and Luerssen,2009).According to Dambudzo (2009), academic achievement and self-
perception are crucial for assisting pupils who could be suffering from negative self-concepts
in their recovery. A report titled "A Study of 9th-grade students' self-perceptions of their
academic performance "was carried out by Murugan both Jebaraj (2017). The specific
guidelines for setting up these self-concept displays in relation to academic performance as a
typical and inevitable important outcome of the student's growth and advancement as
contrasting with joyful manifestations. The self-concept in relation to academic we becomes
crucial to an individual's actions. Students' self-concept is important since they are the future
of future generations It matters when there are patterns in academic performance. According
to Meerah and Mazlan's (2017) research, an athlete's academic performance and self-
perception are related performance. The results of the study showed a shaky positive
association between the variables. This suggests that the study's responders had far higher
self-esteem than average.
