Fermentation of Yeast and Sugar / Lab Instructions

Directions: Today, you will be using the Internet to test and improve you understanding of DNA.
Carefully follow the instructions below and pace yourself to make sure you have time to get
everything done by the end of the period. TURN THIS IN FOR 30 POINTS.

taking pictures or a video of the process.

Objectives:

 To investigate the effect of sugar on yeast.

Materials:

4 x 250ml bottles / 1 x teaspoon / 1 x funnel / 1 x measuring cylinder/beaker / 1 x marker

1 x electric kettle / 4 x balloons / 2 ½ tsp yeast / 24g sugar / 1L warm water

Procedure:

1. Heat up a kettle of water


2. Label four bottles from 1 to 4
3. Using a funnel, add 2 ½ teaspoons of yeast to each bottle.
4. Using a funnel, add 1tsp of sugar to bottle 2, add 2 tsp sugar to bottle 3, and add 3 tsp sugar to
bottle 4. (don’t put any sugar in bottle 1)
5. Add 1 cup of warm water to each of the four bottles, put the lids back on quickly.
6. Shake each bottle gently, before replacing the lid with a balloon.
7. Place all bottles in a warm location for 30 mins.
8. Record observations in the results table
