Inspection of Drake shoes and drum for wear should be made affor every ten (10) Fouts of winch operation PROCEDURE: To Adjust Brakes: 4. Ramave loae from winch ab 2. Remove sprocket, coupler, universal joint, or motor trom input shat of winch, Note: it power source to winch requires no. appreciable torque toltum inva “Neutral” or "OM" position and an acapter ‘can be made to fit tha coupling, Me sp ie not noceseaty 8.Using a suitable adapter, place a torque wrench on the input Shalt of the wineh (09) 4. Measure torque while turning the Input shaft In the payout di Fection. Torque settings should be a8 follows: ees Noelia 12 Note: The torque value above Is necessary to brake the rated load ‘of the Winch. Inno case. should the brake setting fever be Incroased above this torgue valve. 5. To adjust tho brake torque, loosen the two cap screws (40) and rotate the cam (42). To increase the brake setting, rotate away from the "0" or center setting. To reduce the brako seting, 7 tate the cam back toward the "0" or center setting, 6. Rechock the torque value as indicated In 4. above. To Inspect or Repair Brake ‘Loosen and remove cap screws (40) and washers (41) trom Drake assembly, 2. Gently pry the cam (42) out of the cover (46). Caution: Be sure to note which set of dled and tapped holes were Used to postion the cam Failure to re-install the ‘Sam inthis paetion will result in the brake engaging In tie innaul rather than the payout mode. ‘3 Remove the cap screws (89) from the cover (8) 4, Remove the cover (45) from the brake housing (63). 5. Tho brake shoes (46) may now be removed for Inspection. If the shoe lininge are worn tush with the rvet heads, they should be replaced 7. Inspect the drum (50) for severe wear or scoring, I necessary, replace the drum. 8, To temove the brake drum, remove the nut (47) and washer (48). Insert two cap screws in the holes provided in the brake drum 4nd. using @ gear puller, romave the drum. 10. Inspect tho inside lower part of the brake housing for the pre- ‘sonce of cil. I an cil leak exists, replace the seal (61) To Change Direction of Brake Engagement: 1. Remove cap screws (40) and washers (4). 2 Rotato cam (42) in either direction until another set of drilled ‘and Tapped Roles becomes visible through the slots in the cam, 8. Recinsall the cap screws (40) and washers (81) in these tapped Roles 4. Adjust brake as described above. Caution: Any change in winch mounting, direction of cable spooling, oF replacement of worm and gear may elfect the operation of the brake. it you nave any question ‘bout the performance of the brake on yout Tul Winch, stop using it immediately and contact Tulsa Winch, or one of our authorized’ distnbutors General Information Operating Characteristics TULSA winches are worm-gear driven de- signed for heavy loads at slow speeds and {or intermittent duty. Drum capacities for cable are not excessively large, purposely 10 protect the worm and gear in the winch from prolonged pulls under heavy loads ‘which might generate enough heat to per- ‘manently damage the worm, goar and boarings. Due tothe fact that most loads are seldom sioady, but are usvally jerking or vibrating, imposing a load on the winch several times the actual weight being Iitod, the lubricant used in the worm {gear case must be ofthe highest quality {and itis necessary to have a stety brake. | ‘The worm and gear in Tulsa winches (except for the special high speed ‘winches using double thread worm and ‘gear) are of the low helix angle, ow efficiency type. The low etfciency of the worm and gear means that a good part ofthe energy transmitted in the winch is Converted into heat which must be dis- sipated through the lubricant to the outside ar, ‘Tulsa Winches are equipped witha reverse | raft clutch, which cannot be disengaged while the wineh ie under toad. This ture, along with the automatic worm safety brake, Insure that a load must be lowered under power When the winch Is | rot under load, the drum eluteh can be disengaged, permitting the operator to p00 line off the drum by hand, thus ‘saving wear on the automatic safety brake, | 8 well as othor parts of the winch, | All Tut inches are equipped with either ' drum band brake or a drum drag brake. | hich facilitates spootng line off the drum by preventing over-running and tangling, These brakes are applied by amanval | control lever or automaticaly. Automatic Worm Brake Assembly ‘THE AUTOMATIC WORM BRAKE of Tulsa winches can be assembled with right hand for left hand cam settings. The automatic form brake is designed to completely re- lease in the forward speed af the worm or | the load ling direction of the worm, and automatically brake In the reverse direc tion of the worm of when a load on the winch tends to rotate the worm in reverse, When a load is held suspended by tha | automatic brake, a small amount of ro- | versing power is necessary to lower the | load and therefore, the worm brake should be tightened only to that amount neces- ‘217 to suspend the maximum load to be hhandled. This wil reduce wear to a min- |mum on the brake linings and prevent unnecessary heating in reverse or the 'oad-lowering operation. The direction of tightening the worm brake is shown on the outside of the cam and the “hand” of | ‘the cam should be such thatthe tighten= Ing direction isin the forward rotation of the worm, oF the load-iting rotation of the worm, forthe automatic brake to op- crate satisfactorily, “The automatic warm brake operates dry and Is cam operated. The cam of the cam- type brake can be set in sither of two po- sitions, depending upon the direction of | | folation of the worm shaft in the load | raising direction and the hand ofthe worm land gear Installed in the winch, The cam must be installed inthe correct position or the brake will not function WHEN SPOOLING LOOSE CABLE OFF ‘THE DRUM, disengage the clutch and pull | cable off manually. This eliminates unnec- sary wear on the worm brake linings. ‘The worm brake is easily adjusted by loosening or removing cap screws as nec ‘essary and turning the cam in the tec tion ofthe tightening arrow. All brake linings wear and itis necessary to adjust ‘the worm brake from time to time depend: | Ing on the frequency of its use. I wil be= come apparent when the lining fs worn — the brake will begin to lip and wil nt, hold a load. At this point the braka should be adjusted, or if already tight a2 pos- ined sible, the brake shoes should be land othor worn parts replaced, BRAKE ADJUSTMENT S INSTRUCTION PLATE @ < eA ‘A DRUM BRAKE ASSEMBLY is furnished ‘on our winches to retard the speed of the cable drum when spooiing of loose ceble. Use of the brake in “ttee-spoating” of the cable drum prevents tangling of the cable on the drum, ‘Suggestions and Precautions 1. "Wear-in Period” — Winches, tke other machinery, should be operated care- fully during the frst tw hours of oper- ation. Frequent cooling-off periods are ‘essential to provent over-heating 2, Cable Sizes —Nover use largor size Cable than Is shown on current catalog erature for the winch model being used. 8. Slow Speeds—intermittent Duty — Op- ation at slow speeds with intermittent ‘operation are essential to prolong the service of worm-gear winches. 4, Shock Loads — Avoid shock loads. This type of load imposes a strain fon the winch many times the actual weight of the load, 5, Engaging Winch Clutch — Always make certain that winch cluteh is either com- pletely engaged or disengaged (as de- fired) to save wear on clutch jaws and Insure sate 6. Operating Cycle— The operating cycle consists of: (2) Disengaging winch drum cluteh and pulling off enough cable to allow hooking to load. The drum brake should be used to keep drum from falling to fast and thereby entangl- Ing cable. (b) Atter hooking to load engage drum Clutch and release the drum brake (6) Depress engine clutch pedal and shit power take-off Into forward speed using low speed for heavy loads (d) Release engine clutch pedal ang winch will reel In cable. (0) The winch is stopped by depressing engine clutch pedal and the load will be held by the automatic brake on the end of the worm shat (To lower the load oF to romove cable {rom load, shift power take-off into reverse and release engine clutch Pedal. The winch will hen unreet cab ‘Always keep in mind the load to be hhandled should not exceed sate working load of the winch. Sate working loads are figured on the frst layer: therefore, for ‘each layer of cable on the drum, the load the winch will handle Is reduces.
