INTRODUCTION
COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges to students, educators, and
parents. Children already coping with mental health conditions have been especially
The vulnerable to the changes ,and now we are learning about the broad impacts on
students as a result of schools being closed ,physically distancing guidelines and
isolation, and other unexpected changes to their lives .The COVID-19 global
pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-COV-
2)virus triggered governmentally mandated lockdowns ,social distancing ,quarantines
and other measures in the interest of public health. The mandated lockdowns abruptly
and dramatically altered people’s daily routines, work, travel, and leisure activities to a
degree unexperienced by most people living outside of war zones. This study provides
invaluable information on the self-perceived mental health of grade 10 St. Elizabeth
students.

Background of the Study

The corona virus diseases 2019 (COVID -19),first identified in Wuhan in the east of
China in December 2019 [1],has spread at an alarming rate and has become a major
challenging public health problem around the world [2].In response to this pandemic,
the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of
international concern on January 30 2020 [3].The mortality rate of COVID-19 was
initially lower outside then in China [4],witch led to the expectation that the disease’s
impact on national health would be minor ,which was not the case. In France, as in
many countries, government officials announced the closure of middle and high
schools, universities and other educational institutions to prevent the rapid spread of
COVID-19 by breaking important chains of transmission[5].This preventive measure
concerned more than 2.7million students.
Students have been identified as a vulnerable group experiencing significant levels of
stress, anxiety, and depression affecting their mental health[6,7] Before the pandemic,
one in five grade 10 students worldwide experienced one or more diagnosable mental
disorders[8,9]The academic years are considered an essential element in building a
foundation of positive health behaviours that promote well-being into
adulthood[10].During this period of life, young adults face a variety of challenges and
are exposed to significant risks affecting their health status[11].A change in place of
residence ,increased responsibility, peer pressure, learning and work scheduling are all
resources of psychological difficulties such as stress, anxiety, depression[12].With
years of budget cuts and the inability to meet basic student needs ,these same students
are even more vulnerable in such a crisis, and current evidence shows that students
from lower socio demographic backgrounds are more affected
Previous woks showed that during an outbreak, individuals experience negative
emotional responses, such as anxiety and depression symptoms [15] hence, stressful
events and public health emergencies such as the COVID-19 outbreak are potent
adverse environmental factors that can have more psychological effects among
students that can be expressed as fear, worry altered quality of sleep and finally altered
quality of life.

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
This study showed that living conditions during lockdown had a clear impact on the
mental health of students. There is a need to improve prevention and to access distance
education as well as an urgent need for measures to develop healthy coping strategies
for students. This is significant challenge and will assist in moderating the risk for the
development of further distress and mental health concerns.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The Covid 19 Pandemic has had a significant worldwide impact on the lives of people. The
teachers, students, and their families have experienced several different challenges, including
increased stress and anxiety that has led to deration of mental health.

Are people with mental disorders, or those who abuse alcohol or other substances
more likely to get Covid 19? Yes or No? Why?
If someone has a mental disorders, what should they do to avoid getting Covid 19?
If someone already has a pre-existing mental health condition, how can they
protect/promote their mental well- being

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effects of COVID 19 pandemic to
the mental health of grade 10 students. Given the scope of the COVID -19 pandemic,
it is crucial to better understand how a pandemic and associated lockdowns impact on
mental health.
This study is conducted at Sto. Nino National High School S.Y. 2022-2023. 20
students will be chosen randomly by the given questionnaire.
SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
Our study aims to conduct a timely assessment of the COVID 19 pandemic situation
has brought this vulnerable population into renewed focus.
The aim of this study is to explore the impacts of COVID-19 on peoples mental
health, to assist policy makers to develop actionable policies, and help clinical
practitioners (e.g., social workers, psychiatrists, and psychologists) provide timely

services to affected populations.
