And the Biggest Snub Goes to…

When the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday, there was cause for celebration for
some long-overlooked names (such as Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis). But the news was
also notable for its striking omissions. No women were nominated for Best Director, despite the
highly lauded work of Sarah Polley (Women Talking), and Gina Prince-Bythewood,
whose Woman King was shut out, including a snub of actress Viola Davis. Meanwhile, Jordan
Peele’s beautifully shot Nope lived up to its name, failing to nab a nomination, and Danielle
Deadwyler’s turn as Emmett Till’s mother was also passed over. The ceremony is set for March
12.
