1. The shelf life, in days, for bottles of a certain prescribed medicine is a random variable having
the density function

Find the probability that a bottle of this medicine will have a shell life of (a)
at least 200 days;
(b) anywhere from 80 to 120 days.
2. An important factor in solid missile fuel is the particle size distribution. Significant problems
occur if the particle sizes are too large. From production data in the past, it has been determined
that the particle size (in micrometers) distribution is characterized by

(a) Verify that this is a valid density function.

(b) Evaluate F(x).
(c) What is the probability that a random particle from the manufactured fuel exceeds 4
micrometers?
3. The loaves of rye bread distributed to local stores by a certain bakery have an average length of
30 centimeters and a standard deviation of 2 centimeters. Assuming that the lengths are
normally distributed, what percentage of the loaves are (a) longer than 31.7 centimeters?
(b) between 29.3 and 33.5 centimeters in length?
(c) shorter than 25.5 centimeters?
4. The life, in years, of a certain type of electrical switch has an exponential distribution with an
average life β = 2. If 100 of these switches are installed in different systems, what is the
probability that at most 30 fail during the first year?
