SCIENCE EDUCATION

I. Learning Objectives

At the end of the Lesson, you are expected to:

1. Discuss the purpose of the science education.

2. Reflect on one’s competence in science in light of the strands of scientific proficiency.

II. Learning Activities

Science Education is concerned about learning, teaching, and understanding science.

There are three dimensions of science that are all important in science education: science
knowledge, process of doing science and scientific attitudes. Science is one of the most
important subjects that must be learned because of its relevance to the students’ lives. In the
science class, the students use and develop life skills such as problem solving and critical
thinking, which they need to succeed in school, career, and beyond. These lifelong skills allow
students to generate ideas, weigh decisions objectively, and understand the evidence.
Teaching science is important because of several reasons. First, the nation is dependent
on
the technical and scientific abilities of its citizens for its economic growth and national activities.
Moreover, science is a significant part of human culture and represents one of the highlights of
human capacity. Also, it provides a laboratory of common experience for development of
language, logic, and problem-solving skills. Finally, for some of the students, it will become a
lifelong vocation or career.
Understanding science is multifaceted. Current research indicates that proficiency in one
aspect of science is closely related to proficiency in others. Like strands of a rope, the strands of
scientific proficiency are linked. The National Academy of Sciences developed the strands of
scientific proficiency that address the knowledge and reasoning skills that the students must
acquire to be considered fully proficient in science. The students who are proficient in science:
• Know, use, and interpret scientific explanations;
• Generate and evaluate scientific evidence and explanations;  Understand
the nature and development of scientific knowledge; and  Participate
productively in scientific practices.
A. ACTIVATE Activity A.1. The Aims of the Study and Teaching of Sciences
The aims of teaching and learning science can be summarized below. Recall
Classroom activities or learning experiences you had that aimed at developing these outcomes
among the students. Recall also your feelings and insights when you experienced those activities
in class.

The table below, adapted from Pawilen (2005), lists some of the key events in the
development of science education in the Philippines. Read each item carefully. Read print
and online sources on other legislations and events that contributed to the improvement of
the quality of science education in the Philippines.

y Programs science curriculum is to produce scientifically literate citizens
who are informed and active participants of the society,
responsible decision makers, and apply scientific knowledge
that will significantly impact the society and the environment.
Specifically, the science curriculum is designed to enhance
three learning domains of the students. These
are performing scientific processes and skills, understanding
and applying scientific knowledge, and developing scientific
attitudes and values. These learning domains are the basis
for drafting the survey questionnaires in this study. With the
improvement of the various learning domains, it is the goal of
the K12 curriculum to produce
students who possess the following qualities.
1. Critical/creative problem solver
2. Responsible Steward of Nature
3. Innovative or inventive thinker
4. Informed Decision Maker
5. Effective communicator

C. ABSTRACT
Activity C.1.

It was previously stated that science teaching is concerned about the teaching of
scientific knowledge and development of science process skills, scientific attitudes, and
values among the learners. Read relevant print and online examples on these domains. Give
and write your own examples on the corresponding column.

How would you encourage teens to take science-related courses and careers?

- To encourage teens to take science - related courses and careers, I will tell
them that science in the real world. Teens can often get more engaged with
science when they can see how it applies in the real world. Visit places where
your teen can experience science in action - such as the planetarium,
observatory, aquarium, zoo, museums and galleries. You can also look out for
interactive websites, science fairs, and science holiday programs that your
teen might be interested in. and also, I will talk teens about all of the different
fields where science is applied every day from food science to marine biology
and many more. Therefore, one of the best factors to encourage them is to
motivate and teaching What an important science.

III. Lesson Synthesis

1. What defines the quality of science education in the Philippines?
- As early as decade of the 1950s, scientist was concerned with the state of
science education in the schools. Leading scientist made Philippine
authorities aware that the teaching of science from grade school level to
college levels in both public and private schools was very inadequate. And
one of the qualities of science education here in the Philippines cannot be
considered as strength it is because Filipino student has the lower score in
reading comprehension.

2. What are the opportunities and challenges in teaching science in the Philippines?
- The opportunities in teaching science in the Philippines is to provide
understanding about our world begin and how exist in this world and also it
helps to think critically in order to solve problems. The challenges in teaching
science in the Philippines are lack of teachers in science and also some of
the teachers do not know to do an experiment instead they focus in boring
discussion just like reading the books and etc.
