The point of view is of the omniscient third-person narrator who focusses mainly on
developing the main character, using the minor characters only as much as is necessary to
present her thoughts and feelings.
The Theme is that one should have faith in one’s self even when one is up against heavy
odds.
Appreciating the Text
 This is a fantasy story in which Matilda, the protagonist, is a gifted child discovering
that she has telekinesis abilities, the power to move things through will-power.
 The Beginning: Introduces the Characters, the Setting and the Situation.
 The Rising Action: Matilda discovers her special talent with a sense of shock and
wants to confide in Miss Honey.
 The Climax: Matilda is able to demonstrate her power again for Miss Honey.

 The Falling Action: Miss Honey recognizes Matilda as a gifted child and comes to
terms with it while Matilda is happily aware of her newfound ability.
 The End: Matilda requests secrecy and Miss Honey honors her request.
 Matilda is a fantasy narrative i.e. it contains elements that are purely imaginative and
could never happen in real life. In this excerpt, the reader encounters fantasy in
Matilda’s ability to move things around with her mind. The plot has been written
cleverly so as to keep the reader in a state of suspense until the end. The writer has
used very descriptive language to make the story come alive.
