THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The solar system is made up of:

-an average star: the Sun- the richest source of electromagnetic energy in the solar system , giving off
heat and light

- 8 planets: -4 terrestrial- the innermost planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars

-4 gaseous- farther away from the Sun: Neptune, Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter

-satellites of the planets, revolving around them: The Moon- a ball of rock that orbits around the
Earth, in the same way that the Earth orbits around the Sun. (Other planets have moons too, Jupiter
has at least 66 !)

- comets, asteroids, meteorites

- the interplanetary medium

1.The closest planet to the Sun is Mercury, and the farthest away is Neptune

2.The biggest planet is Jupiter, and the smallest planet is Mercury

3 Earth is the only planet that we know has creatures living on it.

4.Fill in with the words: universe, galaxy, star in the right form
The Sun is just one of hundreds of billions of stars in the Galaxy that we live in, which is called THE MILKY WAY. The whole
Universe has at least 100 billion galaxies in it.

There are different types of Galaxy in the Milky way which are grouped and named according to their size. The Sun is a
‘yellow dwarf’ . A ‘red dwarf’ is half the size of the Sun and much less bright. A ‘supergiant’ is a supergiant star that is about
70 times as big as the Sun and can be 100,000 times as bright.
