Al mawdu’unal an ‘The importance of Modesty’
Modesty is what we so called ‘AL-HAYAA’ in Arabic.
The concept of al-haya is considered a major Islamic virtue and an integral part of human character.
Ask anyone in the Muslim world, and he or she knows what the Arabic word “al- Haya” is. But if you ask them to define it, they
will be hard pressed to do so.

Modesty basically means to adopt the way of life according to the teaching of Islam. Islam teaches its followers to stay
away from sin and not to be showy arrogant and feel pride. Modesty also means to be good in deeds and stay away from
pride. Adopt the concept of decency and moderation. Islam teaches moderation in all the day to day business of a man
such as in his speech, manner, dress and total attitude and behavior towards life. It is shyness, simplicity and humility
about our abilities and accomplishments.

Muslims should possess both an inner and outer modesty. This is reflected in behavior, speech and appearance, and includes
being mindful of God at all times.
In the holy Qur’an, Allah says, ba’da Audhoo
: “O children of Adam, We have provided
you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are
some of God’s signs, that they may take heed.”

. The concept of modesty in Islam defines the boundaries with respect to decency that are set for every Muslim in terms of
attire, speech, actions and behavior. But why does Islam stress on modesty? A part of the world believes that Muslims are
forced to be modest, to cover up. This is not true. Islam preaches purity and goodness and it is for the benefit of none
other than the Muslim. For example, when a woman in indecent clothes walks by a group of men, they tend to look at her
from head to toe. It’s inevitable. But when a covered woman walks by, she is not looked at for more than just a glance. A
scrutinizing gaze is avoided.

Modesty has a vital role to play in character-building. It restrains everyone from behaving in an undesirable manner and acts as
a shield against lewdness and immorality. It holds the key to piety and good-doing.
