The ancient Sumerian civilization, located in southern Mesopotamia around 3500 BCE, developed many important technological and scientific innovations. They invented the 360 day calendar and sexagesimal (base 60) number system still used today for time and angles. The Sumerians were also the first to develop writing in the form of cuneiform using reed styluses to make wedge-shaped markings on wet clay tablets. They created early wheeled vehicles, sailboats, and plows, and built large zigurrat temples like the Great Ziggurat of Ur.
