(3) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY (not to exceed one page)

This research is made with the aim to provide information and knowledge

with regards to walking as a mode of transport in Baguio City

This will benefit the pedestrians in Baguio City by providing information

and knowledge especially in the benefits of walking as a mode of transport on

the other hand providing awareness on safety and proper use of walkways and

pedestrian lanes.

Both motorists and commuters will also be benefited. By implementing

walking as a mode of transport in the business central district and its

neighboring barangay the traffic experience will be lessen thus giving the

commuters and motorists an ease while travelling.

By providing useful information on the status and needs of the said

location regarding its walkability, the City Government of Baguio City may

utilize it to evaluate the implementation of walking as a mode of

transportation.

The contribution of the study in considering walking as a mode of

transport in Baguio City will also be a help for future researchers who plans

to study the same topic.

(4) REVIEW OF LITERATURE (not to exceed three pages)

1. Walking As A Mode Of Transport

Walking as the most widely used mode of movement but unfortunately not

getting the recognition as one of the modes of transport. The study discussed

the importance of road-related and off road walking activities. The paper

treated walking as a full transport mode. The researcher studied the factors

related to walking such as:

Travel speed was examined in this paper since one of the major

characteristics of walking is the speed progress. The result shows that older

people tend to walks slowly. Another shows that people who lives in larger

cities walks faster than those people living in small cities. The study

further shows that age, sex and weather conditions mainly are the factors

affecting walking speeds in Australia and UK.

Shopping was also considered. The length of walking trips during

shopping are effected. In 1986 ORS study shows that shopping was second to

travel as one of the purpose in trips. The researchers considered shopping in

studying walking as a mode transport because there is an impacts when it comes

to accessibility, the demand for car parking, concentration of pedestrian

flows and vehicle-pedestrian conflicts.

Safety, Security and Choice was also considered. The perceptions of

pedestrians when it comes to walking was highly affected by the risk they are

taking in. Traffic accidents can occur anytime likewise to such risk when

walking especially during night time. Results shows that gender was highly

affected by this. Women have valid concerns when walking alone in urban areas

therefore taking public or private vehicles rather than risking their safety.

Basing from the result pedestrian behaviour, demand and policy are

poorly implemented and monitored causing issues on traffic and pedestrian.

2. Association Between The National Walkability Index And Walking Among US

Adults

The Environmental Protection Agency developed the National Walkability

Index to compare and analyze walkability among US citizens. Reports shows that

almost half of the US adults doesn’t have enough physical activities

especially in walking activities thus by promoting walking means improvement

in design, distance and diversity. In order to examine the association

between walkability and walking there are several methods that was used such

as:

Survey and Analytic Sample. NHIS was used on random sample of US

households. It has multistage probability design that develops nationally

representative sample. The study used questionnaire.

Measures was also used to classify the respondents by age, sex, race or

ethnicity.

Statistical Analysis was utilized wherein percentage were used in

describing index categories basing from the demographic profile.

Chi-square test were used to determine the association of index with

regards to the demographic characteristics.

Linear and quadratic contrasts and pairwise t-test were used to

identify differences and significant trends within index categories.

Logistic Regression was used to examine the association between

walking, dichotomous variable, and index categories. Linear regression was

used to examine associations between weekly walking minutes, a continues

variable, and index categories.

(5) OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the study is to evaluate walking as a mode of

transportation in the Business Central District of Baguio City based on

Walkability Index and by considering factors affecting walkability.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following:

1. What is the demographic profile of pedestrians in Baguio City’s

central business district?

2. What is the relevance of walking to the pedestrians?

3. What is the status of the business central district of Baguio City in

terms of the walkability index indicators:

A. Residential Density

B. Sidewalk Completeness

C. Intersection Density

4. What is the status of the city’s business central district in terms

of walkability considering safety, convenience, comfort and distance?

5. Based on the findings, what recommendation can be developed in

pursuit of characterizing walking as a mode of transportation in Baguio

City?

(6) METHODOLOGY

In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers will

utilize data collecting tools and techniques and analytical approach.

The demographic profile of the respondents such as gender, age,

occupation, address will be determined through a survey questionnaire.

Slovin’s Formula will be used to determine smaller population. Inspection of

sidewalk and pedestrian lanes on the said location will also be undertaken to

determine status and corresponding needs in terms of improvement and

facilitation on the other hand request for reports and necessary information

from the BCPO-Traffic Management Unit shall be made. The study will use

percentage distribution in order to know the percentage of daily trips of

pedestrians, the average kilometers travelled daily and to show the

distinctive differences of the respondent’s demographic profile. Linear

regression will be used to examine the relationship of the variables.

(6)EXPECTED OUTPUTS:

A. ) Categorized data on the respondent’s perception towards walking in terms

of safety, convenience, comfort and distance.

B. ) Graphs illustrating respondent’s demographic profile.

C. ) Recommendations to implement walking as a mode of transport in the

business central district of Baguio City as well on its neighboring barangay.

(7) SCOPE LIMITATIONS & DELIMITATION (three paragraphs discussing each)

The study aims to determine and characterize walking as a mode of

transport especially in the city’s business central district and its

neighboring barangay. This is to know if the implementation of walking as a

mode of transport is possible which can be a great help in the reduction of

traffic problem and promotes healthy living. The study will use Slovin’s

Formula in determining smaller sample since it is not possible to study the

entire population. On the other hand, Simple Random Sampling will be utilized.

The study will solely focus on pedestrians.

The researchers will only focus on the chosen areas because when it comes

to distance, it is more possible since walking as a mode of transportation is

more likely for short trips and it is accessible to town just by walking

without any delays and causing so much of time.

The result may vary depending on gender, age, occupation, purpose, income

level and etc. The study will mainly focus on pedestrians which are residents

of the indicated locations.
