have gained through your studies and the skills you have
developed as a result, you are now well equipped for the
future. You have shown that you have the motivation to
learn new things, which will set you in good stead for the
next steps in life.
In this our 70th anniversary year, it is important to reflect
on our journey as a university. Since 1952, more than
250,000 students have been awarded degrees from the
University of Southampton. During that time, we have
built our reputation as a leading national and international
higher education institution with a global reputation for
research, innovation and enterprise. The commitment and
contribution of our academic staff, and the talent and hard
work demonstrated by you, as our students, has made this
success possible.
I am delighted to congratulate you personally on the award
of your University of Southampton degree. We share in your
pride and wish you every success. We welcome you as a

YOU ARE PART OF OUR
SUCCESS STORY

As a Southampton graduate, you are part of

our distinguished 150 years of history.

During your time here, through your studies and

extra-curricular activities, you have contributed
to the vibrant and successful institution the
University of Southampton is today.

Our history
You may already know that the University of
Southampton received its Royal Charter on 29
April 1952, in the early weeks of the reign of HM
Queen Elizabeth II. In fact, our roots go back
much further than this – to 1862. This is when
the Hartley Institution was established in the city
centre, following a bequest by Henry Robinson
Hartley, the son of a local wine merchant, to the
Corporation of Southampton. Located in Below
Bar, the Hartley Institution was opened by the then
Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston.
In 1902 it was renamed Hartley College, before
becoming Hartley University College and, later,
University College, Southampton. The Hartley
name is still remembered in the Hartley Library
that we all know and love.

Today’s university
This year marks a very auspicious anniversary for our University.
Exactly 70 years ago, we were honoured to be the first University
to be granted a Royal Charter by The Queen, two months after
her accession to the throne.
The Royal Charter enabled Southampton for the first time to
award its own degrees as a fully independent university, after

many years as a degree-awarding branch of the University of
London.
We’ve come a long way in 70 years; from a student cohort of institution for employability
around 850 undergraduate and postgraduate students, we now worldwide
have over 24,500 studying across our campuses in Southampton, QS World University Rankings, 2022
Winchester and Malaysia. We welcome and support bright and
motivated students from over 135 countries to be the best they
can be, pioneer flexible learning and encourage interdisciplinary
practice across our academic community.

5
We have also built a strong national and international
reputation for our research and teaching excellence. We
are a founding member of the Russell Group, consistently
placed in the top 100 universities in the world* and we have
a strong demonstrated continuous commitment to the
quality of our teaching.
Innovative thinking and pioneering research are at the
heart of our culture; our people are finding solutions for
some of the biggest challenges that our planet is facing,
pursuing environmental sustainability, and making a
difference to the world.
This is the place where fibre-optic research is creating
a faster, smarter internet; where the immune system is
leading the fight against cancer; where expertise is tackling
the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, where
resources are being secured for the world’s growing
populations, and through the humanities, we better
understand the world.
We stand for exploration and curiosity, interdisciplinary
thinking, inventive education and cutting-edge facilities to
catalyse change. We inspire minds, bring people and ideas
together and give them the space and support to grow,
create, ignite, and realise their potential.

The future
Our 70th anniversary is a timely reminder that all of us
in our University community, whatever our role, are
custodians of an exceptional institution, one with a
history we should all be proud of, and with a future that
will prove even more remarkable.
As well as your degree and the lifelong friendships you
have made, you are starting the next chapter of your life
with a wealth of experiences that will help you shape your
future into what you want it to be.

undertaken work placements, been involved in
enterprise activities, or spent time studying abroad at
one of our partner institutions. You may also have taken

over 180 countries volunteering projects.

“Being involved in co-curricular activities such as

sport is one of the best ways to enhance student
experience at university. With one of the largest
range of sports clubs in the country, it gives
students at Southampton an excellent opportunity
to meet new people and grow as individuals.
Sport at Southampton relies on the phenomenal
contribution and work of volunteers in committee
roles. The skills that students develop through these
voluntary roles will no doubt set them apart from
other graduates; I congratulate all of those awarded

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
With our world-leading research and innovative ideas, we tackle
global challenges and inspire change to benefit society.

FITTING A LIBRARY IN YOUR HAND

Scientists at the University of Southampton’s
Optoelectronics Research Centre have developed a digital
data storage solution that can contain the complete
history of human knowledge – and is able to survive for
billions of years.
Using nanostructured glass, the research team led by
Professor Peter Kazansky has developed the recording and
retrieval processes of five dimensional (5D) digital data by
femtosecond laser writing, which means you could hold an
entire library’s information in the palm of your hand.
A 5D memory crystal, containing the Foundation Trilogy
of science fiction books written by Isaac Asimov, recently
launched into orbit around the sun inside a Tesla Roadster,
owned by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, aboard the Falcon
Heavy spacecraft.
“It is thrilling to think that we have created the technology
to preserve documents and information and store it in
space for future generations. This technology can secure
the last evidence of our civilisation: all we’ve learnt will not
be forgotten,” says Peter.

DESCRIBING NEW
DINOSAUR SPECIES
Research led by palaeontologists at Southampton
suggests that bones found on the Isle of Wight
belong to three new species, two of which are
spinosaurids, a group of predatory theropod
dinosaurs closely related to the giant Spinosaurus.
Chris Barker, PhD student and lead author
of the study, and the team named the new
dinosaurs Ceratosuchops and Riparovenator. The
only spinosaurid skeleton previously unearthed in
the UK belonged to Baryonyx, which was initially
discovered in 1983 in a quarry in Surrey.
Analysis of the bones carried out at the University
suggested they belonged to species of dinosaurs
previously unknown to science.
Chris Barker, PhD student and lead author of the
study, said: “We found the skulls to differ not only
from Baryonyx, but also one another, suggesting
the UK housed a greater diversity of spinosaurids
than previously thought.”
Dr Neil Gostling, Lecturer in Evolution and
Palaeobiology, who supervised the project, said:
“This work has brought together universities,
Dinosaur Isle museum and the public to reveal

these amazing dinosaurs and the incredibly diverse
ecology of the south coast of England 125 million
years ago.”

CONSERVING MARITIME HISTORY
Engineers at Southampton are working with the National Museum
of the Royal Navy (NMRN) to help find the best materials to ensure
Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, is weatherproof and watertight for the
next half century.
The University’s nC2 Engineering Consultancy is running their specially
designed series of tests to assess the long-term performance of a range
of paints, caulking and glues (plank sealants) and metal fastenings.
The research forms part of a NMRN project to conserve the 18th
Century warship for the next 50 years – replacing rotting planks from
the hull, repairing the structural framework, and renewing the rigging.
“We want to know as much as possible about the materials we are using
– taking an evidence-based approach to choose the right products,”
says Diana Davis, Head of Conservation at NMRN.
“nC2 is helping us to do that, and even if there’s no perfect product
that will last the full 50 years, their data will enable us to plan our
maintenance schedule to keep the ship watertight.”

MAKING NEW PRODUCTS WITH

WASTE CO2
University of Southampton spin-out company, ViridiCO2,
is revolutionising the sustainability of chemical
manufacturing processes by making products from carbon
dioxide (CO2).
There is still a desperate need to reduce carbon emissions
and increase action to address the climate emergency; this
is one of the many global challenges that researchers at
Southampton are tackling head on.
“Our new technology can directly replace petrochemicals
– these are chemicals derived from fossil fuels used in the
chemical manufacturing process ─ with repurposed CO2.
By using waste CO2 in this way, it not only reduces emissions
and fossil fuel reliance, but it also serves as a CO2 utilisation
strategy, rather than just a storage solution,” explains Dr
Daniel Stewart, co-founder of ViridiCO2.
“Our catalyst takes CO2 that would otherwise be released
into the atmosphere and turns it into polymers,” says
Daniel. “These polymers can be used in furniture, cars, and
clothing. This means consumers will be able to buy products
which are made from waste CO2, saving the planet while
buying the products they need.”
This technology was developed during Daniel’s PhD, at
the School of Chemistry, with co-founder of ViridiCO2,
Professor Robert Raja.

THE MEANING OF LIFE COULD WELL BE LUCK
A recent study gives a new perspective on why our planet has managed to stay habitable for
billions of years – concluding it is almost certainly due, at least in part, to luck.
Geological data prove that Earth’s climate has remained continuously habitable for more than
three billion years. However, it has been precariously balanced, with the potential to rapidly
deteriorate to deep-frozen or intolerably hot conditions, causing planet-wide sterility.
Now Professor Toby Tyrrell, a specialist in Earth System Science at Southampton, has used the
University’s Iridis supercomputing facility to run simulations looking at how 100,000 randomly
different planets responded to random climate-altering events spread out across three billion
years, until they reached a point where they lost their habitability.
The study results suggest that chance is a major factor in influencing whether planets, such as
Earth, can continue to nurture life over billions of years.
“We can now understand that Earth stayed suitable for life for so long due, at least in part,
to luck,” he says. “For instance, if a slightly larger asteroid had hit Earth, or had done so at a
different time, then Earth may have lost its habitability altogether.”

KEEPING PATIENTS SAFE IN HOSPITAL

Southampton research has shaped the public debate around
safe nurse staffing levels in hospitals, and informed clinical
guidelines and legislation in the UK.
The Francis Inquiry (2013) into the care scandal at Mid
Staffordshire NHS Trust found that some patients had gone
without essential nursing care with fatal consequences.
Nurse staffing levels were identified as a contributory factor,
and the inquiry recommended that evidence-based national
policy and guidance on safe staffing be developed.
Professor Peter Griffiths and Professor Jane Ball, Dr Jeremy
Jones, and their team from Southampton found that low
nurse staffing was linked to increase risk of death in hospital,
with 86 per cent of nurses reporting they left some necessary
care undone because of low staffing.
“We found that when nurses had to look after more than
eight patients on hospital wards there was a substantial
increase in the risk of harm. The National Institute for Health
and Care Excellence (NICE) commissioned us to review the
evidence and included our ratio of 1:8 as a warning level in
their guideline: Safe Staffing for Nursing in Adult Inpatient
Wards in Acute Hospitals,” says Peter.

16
SUSTAINABILITY AT
ASTRONOMICAL LEVELS
A space research collaboration between the University
and Astroscale UK Ltd has made considerable progress
towards a safe and sustainable orbital environment.
The partnership investigated the effectiveness of active
debris removal strategies using a space debris model
developed by Professor Hugh Lewis at the University.
Astroscale has now launched the world’s first commercial
mission to test its End-of-Life Services by Astroscale
demonstration (ELSA-d) technology, which aim to
remove obsolete satellites from orbit.
Over the next decade, an increase in the number of large
satellite constellations being launched into low-Earth
orbit will add thousands of satellites into space, increasing
the likelihood of collision and posing a risk to the
sustainability of the orbital environment.
“In the results, we saw that there were several
opportunities for debris removal to reduce the risks
associated with large constellations. These are really
encouraging findings that will hopefully contribute to
efforts to achieve safe and sustainable use of the near-
Earth orbital environment,” says Hugh.

WASHING AWAY UNSUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

IN HAIRDRESSING
The UK’s £6.2bn hairdressing industry has a huge environmental
impact, through its use of water, energy, and chemicals.
Southampton research is reducing its carbon footprint and
cutting costs.
Denise Baden, Professor of Sustainable Business worked with
industry professionals on research and found that heating water is
the most energy-intensive activity in a hair salon.
As a direct consequence of the research, the Hair and Beauty
Industry Authority (HABIA) added sustainability practices to all
technical units within its new National Occupational Standards.
This meant that hairdressers across the UK’s estimated 55,000
salons were advised to abandon the default shampooing practice
of ‘rinse and repeat’, to shampooing only once.
Currently, Denise is working with the Green Salon Collective and
22 salons to identify how hairdressers can inspire their customers
to save energy, water and use fewer chemicals at home.
“Hairdressers are in a unique position to combat climate change,”
says Denise. “As they chat to their clients while styling their hair,
they have an ideal opportunity to highlight practical ways that
individuals could adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.”
The aim is to encourage the reduction of individual energy and
water footprints through the promotion of research-based ‘eco
tips’ stuck to mirrors to inspire conversation about sustainable
haircare. This allows stylists to share research showing that too
much hot water and chemicals isn’t good for your hair condition,
skin, planet or your bills.
