Although coral reefs are very beautiful, they are still important in many ways other
than containing the most diverse ecosystems.
They protect our coastlines from damage
The provide a home for a lot of marine life
Are the source of nitrogen and nutrients for marine food chains and help with
nutrient recycling
Help with carbon and nitrogen fixing
Pollution –
Waste from factories (e.g., oil, chemicals,
industrial waste) as well as sewage and
agrochemicals are being deposited onto the
coral reefs.
The sewage and agrochemicals increase the
nitrogen in the water causing an
overgrowth of algae which covers the reef
and prevents them from getting sunlight.
Careless Tourism –
Reckless boat rides, fishing, diving, and
snorkeling happens all the time as tourists
are interfering with reefs, stirring up
sediment, dropping boat anchors on corals
and collecting corals by breaking it off.
Furthermore, tourist resorts are being built
directly on reefs with some even emptying
their waste over the coral reefs.
Things have to improve as we cannot let
our coral reef population go extinct at such
alarming rates. To help preserve the corals
