The Angel of the North
The Angel of the North is a sculpture. It is really big, enormous! It looks even bigger
because it stands on top of a hill. It is
the largest sculpture in Britain. It is 20
metres tall. The wings measure 54
metres across. They are at a slightly
forward angle, to create the image of
an embrace, a hug. The artist, Anthony
Gormley, started the sculpture in 1994
and finished it four years later. The statue is in a town
called Gateshead, beside the main motorway to the
North, the A1. It is built above an old coalmine. Underneath the Angel, miners used to
work in the dark. Normally, angels are shown as beautiful, graceful, white, floating
around in the air. This angel is not like other depictions of angels. This angel is dark,
sturdy, powerful, rooted in the ground. Actually, it has very deep foundations to
withstand strong winds. This monument is a symbol of the Northerners it represents:
strong, resolute, made of steel. It will not bend or break. As you drive North, you see
this massive structure and it is breath-taking. If you are a Northerner, it makes you
feel proud. However, not everybody likes it. Some people say it is ugly and brutal. I do
not agree. I think it is tremendous, absolutely wonderful. But then, I am from the
north of England!
