“Thirty feet beneath the earth in
strict isolation, not knowing a
thing about what was happening
in the world above, I expressed
my concern for spreading the
gospel on all continents, my love
toward the Communists, and my
burning desire that they (along
with those they oppressed) might
be saved. Basically, I dreamt
in that solitary cell about an
international mission to the
Communist world. It seemed the
vain fantasy of a sick mind.”

missions organization that serves
persecuted Christians around the
world. Founded in 1967 by Richard and
Sabina Wurmbrand, VOM is dedicated
to inspiring believers to deepen their
commitment to Christ and to fulfill His
Great Commission — no matter the cost
— with five main objectives:

1. To encourage and empower Christians to fulfill the Great Commission

in areas of the world where they are persecuted for sharing the gospel of
Jesus Christ.

2. To provide practical relief and spiritual

support to the families of Christian martyrs.

3. To equip persecuted Christians to love and

win to Christ those who are opposed to the
gospel in their part of the world.

4. To undertake projects of encouragement,

helping believers rebuild their lives and
Christian witness in countries where they
have formerly suffered oppression.

5. To promote the fellowship of all believers

by informing the world of the faith and courage of persecuted Christians,
thereby inspiring believers to a deeper level of commitment to Christ and
involvement in His Great Commission.
THE MIDDLE EAST:

THE GOSPEL UNHINDERED

When David and Gloria Martinez met while attending missionary school, they both shared a unique calling from
God to take the gospel into the jungles of Colombia. And for nearly two decades, they have lived and ministered in
a guerrilla-controlled “red zone” known for drug trafficking and violence. They’ve planted churches, trained church
leaders, distributed Bibles and built relationships among the region’s various people groups.

As they’ve advanced God’s kingdom in this dangerous area of Colombia, they’ve experienced threats and opposition
from all sides as the government, paramilitaries, rebel groups and organized crime syndicates vied for control of
territory and local religious groups drove them out of their communities. Yet, they’ve persisted in their ministry,
knowing that their work was worth the risk. “We had to decide if we were going to leave or stay. Our decision was to
stay because we were preaching the gospel,” David recalled.

While their ministry in Colombia has grown, their family has grown as well, and the spiritual development of
children is an important part of David and Gloria’s methods for reaching Colombians for Christ. Guerrilla groups
often lure children into their ranks, and thousands of Colombian children are raised in guerrilla camps and trained
as fighters from a young age. To help children follow Christ instead of the rebel groups, David and Gloria teach the
Bible to hundreds of children weekly, picking them up from indigenous villages using a boat provided by VOM.

David and Gloria have three children of their own, and they intentionally involve their children in their ministry
as part of their spiritual education. Though raising children and ministering in an area dominated by violence
and unrest is a challenge, they are thankful for the opportunity to be an example for other families. “It has been a
privilege to preach the gospel and to be a testimony to many other families,” David said. “Sometimes people say
they don’t go to the field because they have kids, but we tell them, ‘You can! You can do ministry; you can work and
your kids will be fine.’”

Ministry among armed rebels can be stressful, though, and David and Gloria’s children have expressed fear and
anxiety when traveling through guerrilla territory. However, they’ve overcome those fears through their faith in God
and encouragement from other believers. “I am not afraid, because I know that God is protecting us and there are a
lot of people praying for us when we do this,” their daughter, Samantha, said.

And knowing that others are praying gives strength and encouragement to David and Gloria as they continue to
advance the gospel in one of Colombia’s “red zones”. “Thank you for going with us to these places,” Gloria said.
“Through your prayers, we go together. We don’t do this alone.”
