Materi Obligation

Expressing Obligation

Example :

 I Have to finish my homework before playing Basketball.

 I must see the doctor soon because I don’t feel well.
 I really must call my parents.

Things to remember :
1. The difference between have to and must is that “have to” indicates that the
obligations comes from someone else, not the speker. This is usually referring to a
rule or law. Must shows us that the obligation comes the speaker.
Example :
 We have to be at the airport at least two hours before the flight. (not the
speaker.
 I really must call my parents.
Here are examples of the differences between have to and must :
 MY doctor said that I have to stop smoking or I’ll risk serious problem ( I
have no choice)
 I must stop smoking. It’s costing me too much money. (it’s my decision)
2. The simple past of must is had to. The simple future of must is will have to.
3. Should also expresses obligation, but there is a difference between must/ have to
and should :
 Must/have to = 100% Obligation.
“When the traffic light turns, red you must stop. “
 Should = 50% Obligation. It’s more advice than an obligation.
“You look tired, you should have rest.”
4. We use don’t have to show that there is no obligation. You can do something if you
want, but it is not obligation.
 You didn’t have to wear a tie to the office. But iw would be nice.
 You didn’t have to pick me up from school. I could go home by school bus.
