INTRODUCTION DRAFT

Nearly 4,000 years have passed since the beginning of poetry. Poetry, like other forms of

literature, is written to communicate ideas, express emotions, and create imagery. The words that

poets use are chosen for their connotations and acoustics, and they are arranged in a rhythm

known as the meter. With two or more lines that end in words that sound similar, some poems

use rhyme schemes.

Poetry has been known as something that uses powerful descriptions about things that

writers perceive to have beauty. Every thought, emotion, or idea is attempted to be expressed in

poetry using the best possible words. Poetry has as many definitions as there are poets. Poetry,

according to William Wordsworth, is "the spontaneous outpouring of powerful feelings."

According to Flanagan (2019), the most important characteristic of poetry is its refusal to be

defined, labeled, or nailed down. Poetry is language's chiseled marble. The canvas is splattered

with paint, but the poet uses words instead of paint, and the canvas is you. However, learning

poetry is quite challenging for some especially when it is being taught in school.

The succinctness of a poem should actually be the ideal art form for students today.

Poetry has historically been about self-expression, resistance, and structural creativity.

Regardless of how poetry can influence students by having the characteristics of these, students

have different experiences of encountering challenges with poetry. Students, when it comes to

learning poetry, complain about feeling disconnected from poetry or not having the connection to

the meaning it wants to convey.

This study, however, focuses on college students who are alleged to struggle with

learning poetry as part of their literature course. The purpose of this research is to identify

problems and potential solutions for students.

Studies and literature in related fields may be of great assistance in further discussing and

understanding the significance of this matter.

According to Abidin's (2020),Salame (2012), and Eliasari (2018) the majority of the

students involved in the study had difficulty identifying literary devices in poetry figures of

speech, which they found too difficult. Furthermore, many respondents had difficulty locating

the themes and values. The majority of respondents stated that they had trouble understanding

the poems' messages or meanings as well as recognizing their literary components, Abidin

(2020) and Eliasari (2018). 90% of students found language to be a major issue that hampered

their comprehension of the meanings of the poems studied in class or in their examination,

Salame (2012). Some of the respondents were also confused by the poems because they were

written in Old English. (pinagsama ko eong tatlong magkaibang study dine)

Vala, Sladova, and Pedagogium (2014) discovered that very few of their respondents

associated poems with emotional experience. They were able to express poetry in the most basic

terms, but they did so incorrectly. The study also discovered that the respondents found filling in

the gaps in V. Holan's poem is the most difficult aspect.

A study conducted by Kiprotich (2009) found out that many students have a strong

aversion to poetry. Poetry is difficult to understand because it is a serious compression of

information in a small number of words, and it is mysterious and perplexing to them, Narsaria

(2022). Teachers who have consistently tried to encourage the students to enjoy the subject have
found it challenging to teach poetry because of this attitude. Many students are put off by

poetry's complexity, or they are uncomfortable with the open expression of emotions and

personal thoughts. Students frequently fail to recognize the importance of poetry in their lives.

An article written by Cavallari (2022), stated that poetry's actual perceived value has less

to do with why many people find it challenging to appreciate and comprehend than it does with

how people currently process information. When communication comes in, we interpret it

similarly and attempt to decipher its literal meaning, because the main barrier to understanding

poetry is our ingrained tendency to communicate in a literal manner.

The previous studies and literature are similar to the current study. The objective of the

current study is to identify the challenges that come with studying poetry. In contrast, this study

focuses on a specific group of college students. This research is important because it gives

students advice and information about learning poetry.

Students in their second year of a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English face

difficulties in their literature subject, particularly in learning poetry. These challenges are

unavoidable in a student's life; however, challenges that they may not be aware of how to cope

with. This study aims to identify challenges and develop potential solutions for how students will

deal with them. This study is being conducted to answer and determine the following:

1. Identify the challenges encountered by the students in terms of:

a. Analyzing poetry

b. Identifying poetic devices

2. How does the generational gap affect learning poetry?

3. Generate possible intervention for students to be more efficient in learning poetry.

The study's findings are significant in the following:

Students: The students are the primary beneficiaries of this research. The study's

findings will provide them with a better understanding of the difficulties they encounter.

Students will also benefit from this research by learning how to deal with challenges.

Teachers: The study will also be a contributor for the school’s facilitators. With

the findings of this study, teachers can think of ways or solutions to help their students

and to also think of possible strategies in learning poetry.

School: The study will assist the higher-ups at the school in formulating strategies

for helping the students effectively manage their stress. This will allow officials to take

action and prioritize students who are facing challenges in a particular aspect of a subject.

In terms of the study's scope and limitations, the results and conclusions are

limited to the responses and perceptions of Second Year students pursuing a Bachelor of

Secondary Education Major in English at Tarlac Christian College during the School

Year 2022-2023.
