Precision Approach
Path Indicator (PAPI)
Compliance with Standards
FAA: FAA L-880 specification AC 150/5345-28D
ICAO: Annexe 14, Volume I, para. 5.3..23 105.3545
NATO : STANAG 3316,
Uses
‘The PAPI and APAPI systems using PPL units with either
2.0r3 light channels offer the pilot information enabling
him to carry out the approach procedure with the utmost
accuracy and safety.
Features
+ With only one lamp in use, the PPL. 400/2 outperforms
all lamps PAPI units having two lamps in use.
+ The use of two lenses in tandom in each ight channel
‘makes the transition fram white to red sharp (never
exceeding 3 minutes of arc over the full beam with).
+ ICAO colorimetry conformity maintained over the whole
width of the red beam.
* Lenses protected from sandblasting by a hardened front
lass. Anti-condensation and antirost treatment of front
ales available on request
+ Long Ife (21000 hours ot full intensity), tungsten halo-
gen prefocus lamps
‘Distortion tre, al aluminium construction yet featuring a
frangible construction
‘Optimal stabiity obtained by using four mounting logs.
+ Easy instalation and leveling using purpose made ig
and instruments,
+ Long focal lenath makes adjustment in elevation easy,
accurate and stable.
+ lecuced maintenence. The unit is fully gsketed and
femains therefore clean inside. Relamping and
replacement of fiter do not require any tools
+ Condensation water is drained away through wire gauze
covered drain holes
+ No water can accumulate on the cover, so reflections
which could constitute @ false optical signal aro
eliminated.
+ Fuly corrosion proof since only aluminium, stainless
stee! hardware and optical glass are used
«Available in 2amps execution (PPL. 400/2) or amps
execution (PPL 600/2)
+ Best match to obstacie protection surtace.
* Tit switch option available

itis recommended that each unit be installed on a solid
concrete foundation. Special care should be taken if the
subsoils known to be unreliable
‘The recommended installation 'ses adjustable legs
secuted on breakable couplings (em 17 of FIG. 3); the
mounting flanges are secured on @ conerete slab flush with
the surrounding ground. Tho isolation transformers can be

In the case of instalation with anchoring legs, the mount-
ing column must be first anchored in the siab using the
purpose mede positioning frame (supplied on request.
‘The PAP! shall be installed as close as possible to the
ground, After assembly, the excavation should be
screened over. All around the units the sol should be
screened from any kind of vegetation
‘ADB's technical depertment is et the disposal of con-
‘uactors and users to calculate the correct positioning of
the system and to provide guidance and advice for any
particuar installation problem.
Adjustment of the Beam Elevation :
‘The beam setting is achieved by means of an alidade
associated with a precision spirit level (FIG. 4). The
‘mounting legs. fitted with differencial setting Sleeves,
allow for very precise and stable elevation adjustment.
Complete, delete or modity as necessary.

Suggested Specification
The PAPI unit will meat or exceed the performance
‘specified (with tit syatch option) by ICAO, Annex 14,
Vol. | para. §.3.5.23 to 5.3.5.45 and will be in compliance
with FAA L-880 specification. The average intensity in
‘ed light willbe at least 15.000 Ca for a horizontal beam
‘spread -6° to +6" and a vertical angle of 3.5° below tran
sition. The transition sector will not exceed 3 minutos of
{are over the full bears width, The unit will use one pre-
focus halogen lamp rated 200 W per light channel
‘The expected lfe of the lamps willbe not less than
1000 hours at fullntensity. The optical system for each
light chanel will consist af a high purity alurninum
reflector, 3 red, through-coloured glass fiter and two
lenses made of optical lass. Lamps and fiters wall be
‘easily replaceable without need of re-calibration. The
PAP! unit will be mounted on four logs fitted with pre-
Cision olevation adjustment. The unit will be made from
folded aluminium sheet fully protected against corrosion,
twill be fully weatherproof. A hardened glass will be
[provided in front of the lenses to protect them against
‘sandblast, A set of installation tools and calibration
instruments will be supplied with each system.
