INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-1
PREPARE THE TREATMENT AREA

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

 Setting up the correct materials and equipment needed for a particular

treatment or service and by preparing the client.
 To know what products, tools and equipment are needed for each ofthe
treatments in the range
 To use a client’s record card to select materials that will be suitable for that
particular client

Record cards

A client’s record card is a professional record of treatments or services that the client
has already had at your salon and is where a therapist can record comments or
suggestions for future treatments. Part of your preparation for a treatment will involve
obtaining a client’s record card from reception. You will need the card to find out what
treatment the client is booked in for, so that you know what you need to set up. The
client’s record card may also give you more information about the client’s likes and
dislikes, skin type, previous products used and the therapist’s methods that will be
helpful to you in deciding which products to select.

When you collect a record for a client from reception, make sure that you check the
client’s first name, surname and address carefully to make sure you have the correct
card. Make sure that you collect the correct record for the client, as some may share a
surname or even a first name.

You will need to hand over the client’s record card to the therapist before she startsthe
treatment.
The treatment room

As the treatment room is used for a variety of different treatments, it is importantthat

it can be adapted to meet the needs of a range of treatments and is wellequipped.

You will
need to
bear all
this in
mind
when

preparing the treatment room.

Setting up for treatments

You need to organize the work area so that everything is hygienic and within reach
and the trolley is set up with the necessary tools, equipment and products, as well as
enough cotton wool and tissues. Your supervisor will show and advise you how to do
this until you are able to set up on your own.

Setting up the workspace for any treatment: a checklist

1. The client’s record card and a pen should be on the trolley ready for
theconsultation.
2. The gown the client will wear during the treatment should be ready, and there
should be a coat hanger or hook available for the client’s clothes.
3. Clean towels should be laid out nearby, either on a stool or at the end of the
couch.
4. The treatment couch should be prepared with a fitted bottom sheet and a
disposable couch roll.
5. The trolley tops and work surfaces should be disinfected and covered with fresh
couch roll.
6. The products to be used during the treatment should be laid out on the trolley
top.
7. The tools to be used during the treatment should be sterilized and then placed
on the trolley top in a jar fi lled with antiseptic.
8. There should be enough cotton wool and tissues on the trolley to complete the
whole treatment.

Sterilization and disinfection methods

It is just as important to maintain excellent standards of hygiene when setting up for

treatments as it is when carrying out the treatments themselves. Look back your
previous lesson to remind yourself of what you need to do to make sure the workspace
doesn’t encourage the spread of bacteria that could result in cross-infection.

Environmental conditions

It is important that the environmental conditions in the treatment room are suitable
for the client and the treatment. A comfortable treatment area will help to make sure
that a salon visit is enjoyable for the client and a satisfying work environment for the
therapist.

Lighting

Lighting gives a salon atmosphere, so it can have a powerful effect on how the client
feels when she walks into the reception, her level of relaxation once in the treatment
room, and whether she feels as though she has had a satisfying treatment at the end.

The lighting in a treatment room will depend on the treatment. For example, for make-
up the lighting should be bright and not cast shadows, but for facial treatments the
light should be relaxing and soft with a magnifying lamp available for close work and
skin analysis.

The lighting should in any case be:

 Bright enough to carry out treatments
 Soft enough to enable clients to relax.

Therefore, it is recommended that a treatment room has a good over headlight on a

dimmer switch, and a magnifying lamp for close work such as skin inspection.

Make sure that:

 you can always see clearly

 you and your client don’t squint because lighting is poor, or become dazzled by
lights that are too bright
 you always report flickering or faulty lights to your supervisor.

Heating

Clients tend to relax when they have treatments, and therefore their body temperature
can drop, so it is important that the salon is warm but not so hot and stuffy that it is
uncomfortable or encourages germs to multiply.
A comfortable temperature for beauty therapy work is between 20 and 24°C, with the
level of moisture in the air between 40 and 60 per cent. It is also important that the
salon is warm enough for clients to undress for treatments.
There are many different heating methods, but some are either too expensive to run on
a regular basis or are not good at heating large areas. Therefore, the best method of
heating is thermostatically controlled heating. This can easily be turned up or down,
and every room is fitted with a radiator. When it is installed by a qualified engineer
and checked annually, it is the best and most cost effective way to heat a salon.
Ventilation

Circulation of fresh air is needed to make sure that clients and staff don’t become
drowsy and lacking in energy as well as making sure that people are not made
uncomfortable by fumes from products. Fresh air may be gained from open doors and
windows, and by having an air-conditioning system in the salon.

In salons and spas that have steam and sauna areas, it is important that the air does
not become too damp and humid, so good ventilation is essential.

If there is a lack of fresh air:

1. illnesses spread because of germs and bacteria circulating around the salon
2. a smelly and stuff y atmosphere is created, which is unpleasant for staff and
clients
3. there is a build-up of fumes from glues, varnish and cleaning products, which
can cause headaches and sickness.

Methods of ventilation include extractor fans, windows, air vents, doors and flues.

General comfort

The general comfort of the client includes making sure that:

 she is seated comfortably

 she is warm
 she is happy with her surroundings
 the noise levels are not too high
 there is relaxing music playing in the background
 there are nice smells
 the décor is pleasant and welcoming
 the staff are polite, respectful and professional.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-2
PREPARING THE CLIENT

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

 Know the do’s & don’t of polite conversion

Introductions

When the client is brought through to you, or you go to collect her from reception,
make sure that you have an open, confident expression. Smile and make eye contact.
Greet the client by her name, then introduce yourself and explain that you will be
preparing her for her treatment. Ask the client to follow you through to the treatment
room. Before the treatment begins, make polite conversation to build a good
relationship and help the client to feel at ease.

Polite conversation is:

 asking if she has visited the salon before
 asking if she has regular treatments
 enquiring about other treatments the client has had in the past
 enquiring whether this treatment is for a special occasion
 asking questions about the client’s holidays or family
 discussing the weather or light news topics.

Polite conversation is not:

 ignoring the client in order to talk to other members of staff

 talking about yourself or another person, and not asking the client about
herself
 moaning about your last client or your job
 telling the client your life story and about your problems at home
 discussing serious news topics, religion or politics.

Client care

Remove and hang up the client’s coat, then show her to her seat. Make sure that she
is comfortable and provide help where necessary.

Client protection
Protect the client’s clothes with a towel or gown.
 For manicure: be especially careful that she is protected from varnish or
other products that might stain her clothes. For protection, roll up the
client’s sleeves to the elbow and then tuck tissue around them.
 For make-up: protect the client’s clothing with a make-up cape and
protect her hair with a head band.
 For facial treatments: protect the client’s upper clothing with a towel and
couch roll.

Just before you start

Ask the client to remove her jewelery and show her the bowl in which you will be
placing it. Point out that, if she prefers, the client (not you) could put the jewelry in
her handbag.

Cleaning your hands

Explain to the client that you are going to wash your hands as this gives her
confidence in your cleanliness. Make sure that you dry your hands thoroughly,
because wet hands are not clean hands.

Personal presentation and behavior

Remember that it is important to demonstrate a professional approach to all aspects of

the client’s visit. Your own personal presentation and behavior are very important at
all times. Looking smart and wearing appropriate protective clothing, such as a salon
uniform, will give the client confidence in you. As beauty therapists are on their feet a
lot and work very closely with clients, making sure that you maintain good standards
of personal hygiene will mean that the client’s comfort will not be affected by any body
odor.

Appearance: a checklist

Wear smart clothes or uniform – they should be freshly laundered and not smell of
smoke or strong perfume.
1. Your uniform or clothes should not be too short or too tight, and must allow
for easy movement while carrying out treatments.
2. Your hair should be clean and neat.
3. Wear light, but attractive, day make-up – definitely not heavy make-up.
4. Your nails should be neatly manicured – no chipped nail varnish.
5. Keep your breath fresh – no tobacco smells.
6. If you wear jewelry, it should be simple and kept to a minimum.

Definition of Terms

Chiropodist – somebody who performs medical care and treatment of the

human foot.

Foot Spa - beauty care service offered by salons to beautify the feet and
induce relaxation and stimulation.

Spa is a beauty care service where curative mineral is present for personal
beautification. If spa is applied to the feet, the patron can experience relaxation,
pain is relieved and blood circulation is stimulated due to the warm and enhancing
effect of the softening agents. It exfoliates dead skin cells and smoothens
roughness, aiding the penetration of treatment ingredients in the system.

Clients care is essential to your success as an operator. It involves concern

for your client, and satisfactorily meet all her needs.

When a client makes an appointment for a foot spa, you should tell her how
long the treatment will take. Ask the client if she is currently receiving treatment
from a chiropodist for condition such asverruca or athlete’s foot. Advise her to wait
until the condition is
cleared.

The foot spa must not be carried out if the client has any of the following
conditions:

• athlete’s foot
• verruca
• diabetes
• cuts or abrasions
• infectious skin diseases such as ringworm

Treatment should only proceed until the disorders have been cured by a
chiropodist or dermatologist.

After taking all these into consideration, you can now prepare the treatment
area, starting with the preparation of tools and instruments. All metal instruments
should be sterilized in the autoclave prior to use. Non-metal instruments should be
sanitized by immersing them in disinfecting fluid.

Prepare the equipment neatly on the trolley so that everything you need is
at hand and the client will not be disturbed during treatment.

Place a towel on the floor between you and the client. The bowl containing
warm, soapy water should be placed on this towel.

Direct the client to wear personal protective clothing and to remove

jewelries and accessories.

Set the foot spa machine and check if the client can withstand the water
temperature.

Place two towels on your lap; one is for protection, the other is for drying
the client’s feet. Keep the other towels close by for wrapping of the client’s feet.

Perform foot spa.

LET US REMEMBER

 Analysis of the client’s foot condition will help you determine the
cosmetics and/or service that should or should not be applied.
 After analyzing the client’s nails and adjacent skin, a treatment plan
should be considered in order to correct any skin disorders.
 Maintain good personal communication and general hygiene. Wash
your hands regularly and clean implements thoroughly.

LET US STUDY!

Definition of Terms

Foot Spa – a beauty care service offered by salons to relax and

moisturize the feet.

Knead – to work and press with the hands.

How to perform foot spa

There is no better way to treat a friend or a loved one than to give his/ her sore
feet a wonderful foot spa.

Steps

1. Soak feet in warm water for about 10 minutes. You may wish to
include drops of your favorite essential oil or bath salts. Peppermint or
lavender oil is preferred by many. Dry the feet completely before
starting massage.

2. Apply a moderate amount of cream or oil to hands to add comfort and

ease. Make sure hands are warm to avoid discomfort. Mineral oil is
not absorbed in the skin, wipe it off cleanly.
3. Begin by stroking the top of foot, between cords located on top of
foot at instep. Move to the direction of the toe to the ankle. Then,
continue by stroking the sole of foot gently, then increase pressure.

4. Make circular motions with your thumb and fingers over the sole of
the foot, and use more pressure in areas such as the heel or ball of the
foot. Start from the top and work your way down. Do not neglect the
sides.

5. Hold the foot with one hand, use the other hand to rotate the foot,
first at the ankle, and then near the ball of the foot. Be gentle. Repeat
about 5 times in each direction.

6. Knead the sole by holding the foot with one hand and making a fist
with the other, using moderate pressure into the sole. Give enough
attention to the arch.

7. Begin with the big toe working towards the pinky toe, take each toe
individually. Roll the toe between your thumb and forefinger as you
slide your fingers down the toe end applying gentle pressure. Gently
squeeze the end of each toe.

8. Take your index finger and slide it between each toe for about 5 times.
To complete the massage, use your thumb and fingers to make the
circular motions once again over the sole. End by stroking the sole and
instep.
9. Wipe off any excess cream or oil with a soft towel. Slip into thick socks
to retain the moisturizing effect..

10. Try to give equal attention to both feet, as the body abhors
asymmetry.

LET US REMEMBER

 Massage is a relaxing and worthwhile part of a foot

spa. Better blood circulation increases the chances of having healthy
nails.

 Vitamins and minerals in fruits have curative effects to the body

especially when properly used.

 Drops of aromatic oils can be mixed with warm water in the foot spa
machine.

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU LEARNED?

In not more than 5 sentences, explain why foot spa and foot massage are
beneficial to the body. Use a separate sheet of paper for

Trimming and Filing Procedure

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

a. handle manicuring tools properly

b. perform the step by step procedures in trimming and filing finger and
toenails
c. observe safety measures when filing and trimming finger and toe nails

Introduction:
Fingernails’ getting a little long and it/they is/are too hard to type? Or did you just poke a
hole in your partner with that dagger cleverly disguised as your big toenail? Time for a little personal
grooming! Cutting your fingernails and toenails is easy, and it's the right thing to do, and this
information sheet will show you how.

1. Prepare your nails. Soak your nails for a few minutes before you cut them, as this softens them
up and makes them easier to trim. This will also help avoid splitting your nails. This step is especially
important for toenails. Those can be pretty tough.

2. Cut your nails. Cut them straight across until they no longer extend over your finger or toe, so
that they don't show any white. If you are a finger-style guitarist, you may want to leave about
1/16th inch (1.5 to 2 mm) on your picking hand—usually the right hand

3. Wait for your nails to dry. Wait for a little bit until your nails are dry and are no longer soft. Filing
wet nails will leave you with jagged, rough nails when they dry, and may also cause your nails to split
and crack.

4. File your nails. Use a nail file to shape your nails, and to make sure the edges of the nail are
smooth. Jagged nails can catch on clothes, socks, and pantyhose and will cause nails to tear or break.
When filing, always file gently in one long stroke, from the side to the center of the nail. Use the
coarse, shaping side first if you need to remove more nail. Then use the finer-grade shaping side to
smooth your nails out. Your nails should be slightly triangle or oval and not pointed, when finished.
This will keep them from breaking. Nails can weaken if you file too low into the corners and sides t

Look them over. Look your nails over to ensure that your nails are all the same length and shape,
and also that they're smooth and not jagged or pointy. Keep clipping and filing until they all look the
same and are smooth. Once they are, you're done!

Proper Handling and Usage of Tools

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. identify the most commonly used tools in performing manicure

and pedicure
2. demonstrate the proper way of handling the cuticle pusher
3. observe safety precautions when pushing dry cuticle.
Introduction:

A cuticle pusher is a simple nail tool used to perform manicures and

pedicures. It pushes the skin from your cuticles back and away from your
nails to help your nails grow stronger. Here's information on how to safely
use a cuticle pusher.

1.Decide whether to get a cuticle pusher made of steel or wood. Steel cuticle pushers are best for
tough, hard cuticles. Wooden cuticle pushers are best for soft cuticles.

2.Pick which tip you want your cuticle pusher to have. Some have blunt rounded ends, others have
sharp pointy ends or spoon-shaped ends and yet others are curved. The most common one has a
rounded tip on one end and a sharp tip on the other.

3.Prepare Your Nails

For best results, soften the nails and cuticles before using the cuticle pusher.

This is a necessary step to make pushing the cuticles away from the nails easier. If the cuticles are
not soft and you try to push them, you might tear the skin, causing painful lesions.

4.Apply cuticle remover on the nail.

You can also use cuticle oil together with the cuticle remover. Make sure to spread it evenly all
over the edges. Leave it for 2 minutes.

Submerge the fingers in a small bowl of warm water and soak them for about 3 minutes. This will
help soften the cuticles even more

Use a small towel to gently dry your fingernail.

5.Push Back the Cuticles

Use the rounded part of the cuticle pusher to push back the cuticles on the surface of the nail.
Angle the pusher 35 to 45 degrees and gently slide it towards the base of the nail and push away the
softened cuticles.

Use the pointed, sharp part to push down the cuticles at the corners of the nails. You can also
use this tip to clean under the nails. Repeat this process for all the nails.

Shapes and Styles of Nail

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. identify the different shape and styles of nails

2. discuss the best style for the desired shape of nails

3. demonstrate the proper way to achieve the desired shape of nails.

Introduction:

There three most common nail shapes are: square, squoval and oval. Let's take a look at each
of these shapes and how you can achieve them.

Square

The square nail shape is one of the strongest nail shapes you can have because the full width of the
nail remains at the free edge. However, this shape isn't usually flattering on shorter nails as it can
make hands look blunt and heavy; the square shape is best used to draw attention to longer nails. To
create this shape: hold your nail file at a 90° angle perpendicular to the finger and file straight across
in one direction.

Squoval

The squoval nail shape is the generally the most popular nail shape, as well as the most universally
flattering shape. The nail is still able to maintain most of its natural strength but the corners are
slightly rounded for a softer, more feminine appearance.

To create this shape: first start by following the directions for creating the square shape. Once you're
satisfied, you'll want to hold your file at a 65° angle and carefully round the corners. As you move
your file from the corner to the middle of your nail, work your file from the 65° angle to a 90° angle.

Oval/Rounded

This is a more traditional nail shape but it's still very popular. The tip is rounded instead of squared
but the sides of the free edge are able to grow straight, which maintains the strength and structure
of the nail.

To create this shape: allow the sides of your nails to grow straight but hold your file at approximately
a 40° angle and round only the tip of the free edge.

If you're not sure which shape is right for you or which will be the most flattering, here's a tip: take a
look at the shape of your cuticles. If they're rounded, a round nail shape will be flattering for you.
And vice versa, if your cuticles are more squared, then the square or squoval shape will be flattering
for you. Of course, you can choose to have whichever nail shape you prefer; this tip will just help you
make a decision if you're not sure which shape to opt for!

That ends our discussion of three of the most common nail shapes you can have and how you can
achieve them. There are a couple of other nail shapes that you can have, but most opt for one of the
above shapes

Learning Objectives:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. define first aid

2. discuss the importance of learning first aid procedures

3. demonstrate the proper way if giving first aid to a wounded

nail ; swollen foot/ankle.

Introduction:

First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden

illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from
worsening, and/or promote recovery.

Procedures WHEN to Give First Aid

1. When to See a Health Care Provider

 Go to an emergency room or call a health care provider

quickly if
 The finger or toe is deformed, which may indicate fracture or
dislocation.
 The wound looks deep or long enough to need stitches.
 Discoloration or a bruise under the nail covers more than a quarter of
the nail or there is continuing, intense pain.

 The nail is completely torn off or partially cut off from a crush injury or
cut.

2. Stop Bleeding

 Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth.

3. Clean and Protect the Wound

 If the nail is torn, use sterile scissors to cut off rough edges to prevent
further injury.
 Clean the wound and torn nail area with soap and warm water.
 Apply antibiotic ointment and bandage.

4. Treat Symptoms

 For swelling, ice the area.

 For pain, give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve).

5. Follow Up

 Continue to use ice and over-the-counter pain medication as needed.

Pain and swelling should clear up within a week. It can take several
months for a nail that has separated from the nailbed to grow back.
 Change the bandage daily. If signs of infection develop -- such as pus,
redness, or heat around the nail or a red streak extending from the
wound -- call a health care provider promptly.
 The person may need a tetanus shot or booster, depending on the date
of last booster shot.
 If the person sees a health care provider, the health care provider will
determine if there is a fracture or if tissue under the nail needs repair
