In 1984 , we can wonder to what extent can oppression in dystopia become

reality ?

Oppression can be set in a real world

To begin with, citizen's behaviours are under constant surveillance of the government.

For example, in China, a system called social credit is based on a system of

punishments and rewards according to people’s behaviour. If a citizen brakes the
rules, his score will decrease and he will loose some of his rights. With this system, the
Chinese government can control citizens’ s behaviour and endanger their freedom.
This system of oppression is set in a real word and it can easily lead to totalitarianism.

Then, citizens cannot express themselves

For instance, in Russia, the demonstrators against the war are arrested by the police
and sent to jail. The citizens cannot express themselves because of the oppression of
the Russian government.

Moreover, citizens don’t have the right to speak and cannot think by themselves

For example, in 1984, a dystopian novel written by George Orwell, people have no
freedom to think nor to speak. In this modern world, citizens have to obey the
dictatorship. It is forbidden there to remember the past to prevent people to become
aware of the illogical and the absurd world they live in. That’s why the pen is
considered as an archaic instrument. We can link this novel with the situation in
China. Indeed, in this almost tyranny, citizens don’t have access to unbiased sources
of information. Chinese people cannot demonstrate nor expose their own opinion.

To finish with, women are considered as objects

As a matter of fact, in the TV serie the handmaid's tale, women have lost many of their
rights. In fact, by law, women in Gilead are forced to work in very limited roles, including
some as natal slaves. They are not allowed to own property, make a career, handle money,
nor read. These women, called Handmaids, are assigned to the homes of the ruling elite.
They must submit themselves to ritualized rape by their male masters in the presence of
their wives in order to get pregnant. In some countries of the world , like in The Central
African Republic, women are objects. Suffering from a long and war-torn history, the
Central African Republic is still in the throes of armed conflict. And unfortunately sexual
violence is often a tactic of war. Consequently, this tactic is inflicted upon women of all
ages, with girls as young as 10 reporting abuse.
