Introduction General Information

In the battle against boiler plant corrosion the addition of The ABB 7835 Hydrazine Monitor is a microprocessor-based
hydrazine into the boiler feed water as an oxygen scavenger is instrument which uses and electro-chemical cell to measure
now a firmly established practice and has made possible tighter accurately the amount of hydrazine in boiler water. The
controls over dissolved oxygen levels. A reduction in corrosion information provided by the monitor makes it possible to avoid
leads to a reduction in plant breakdowns which, in turn, leads to expensive overdosing of hydrazine or the avoidance of more
a reduction in operating costs. Hydrazine reduces this corrosion costly damage to boiler plant due to the under-dosing of
in three ways: hydrazine.
1. It reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen and water. The Model 7835 is an accurate reliable instrument providing
trouble-free operation and requiring a minimum of routine
2. It breaks down into ammonia at high temperature and
maintenance. It measures hydrazine over two ranges:

surges and gives a certain amount of protection against
dissolved salts. However, unless an excess of hydrazine over
and above the amount needed to scavenge the oxygen is
present, this layer reverts to haematite and the protection is then
lost.
In the past, batch sampling was considered adequate to keep a
check on hydrazine levels but because the amount of hydrazine
required varies as plant conditions change, it is now recognised
that a continuous record and/or control is desirable.

Liquid Handling Section

The major components of the liquid handling section are a Hydrazine sensor – this comprises a central ceramic tube
constant head unit, a calibration solution container, a solenoid which is fitted in a gel-filled outer jacket. A silver cathode wire is
valve, a hydrazine sensor and a sample buffering system. wound round the outer surface of the tube and a spiral platinum
anode is inserted down the centre. Sample flows up through the

to adjust the pH of the sample. This is achieved by introducing
the caustic into the sample via a porous disc, a method which
eliminates the moving parts associated with the use of pumps or
other mechanical injection systems making the pH adjustment
reliable and virtually maintenance-free.

Electronics Section
Receiving current from the hydrazine sensor and sample
temperature information from a thermistor incorporated in the
sensor body, the electronics section converts these signals to a
digital display of hydrazine concentration. It also provides
current, alarm and remote indication of range outputs as well as
the power supply for the liquid handling section. The digital
display is a 7-segment LED which indicates the following
information:
a) Hydrazine concentration (low range) 0 to 99.9g/kg
(high range) 0 to 999g/kg
b) Running mode Normal – indicates
hydrazine concentration
During calibration –

The push buttons on the facia are used to set/display the alarm
d) Alarm settings Displays high or low alarm values, the calibration solution concentration, the sample
settings in g/kg temperature and to trigger a calibration sequence. A 3-position
switch mounted directly below the buttons selects the range:

The information displayed depends upon the operating
conditions and which push buttons on the monitor facia are
depressed at the time.
