You are on page 1of 1

Dear student, this is the first time I will have the chance to read more from you.

It is a very important
moment in our semester.
Please read the questions/statements below and write about them. You are supposed to consider our
readings & discussions of Brian Friel's 1980 play, Translations.

1 - Discuss how Friel explores the significance of place. In your answer, consider the playwright's
use of linguistic and literary features and relevant contextual factors.

The use of an imaginary city (Baile Begg) as an allegory to create a narrative that addresses
Irish concerns (family, failure, twenty faith) during the end of the century, without a doubt, was an
excellent artistic approach. It is realizing that the actions of possible characters reverberate beyond the
text or dramaturgy, and dialogue with the audience. The figurative place is used as a means of reflection. I
remembered a lot from “Terra em Transe” (film by Glauber Rocha), where the filmmaker also uses an
imaginary city (El Dorado) to talk about the political moment that Brazil was experiencing.

2 - Are you familiar with any place name around your neighborhood/area or in your hometown
that has an interesting choice of name? Do you know the history of that name, or if you do not, have
you ever imagined why it is named like that? Would you rename that place?

I am from a small town in the interior of Bahia called Jequié. The city itself has an
interesting name, as it is a reference to an indigenous fishing instrument called “Jequí”. In the city there is
a place that is called "Viveiro" because it used to have several birds in captivity. I think we could change
the name to “Liberdade”, I think it's a better name. Where the prison abounded, today is a public sports
court where kids have fun freely.

3 - Please comment on your experience of reading the play—this is our full three-act play we read
in class. How did you react to the text? Do you have a favorite and/or a least favorite part? Can you
explain why it reached you like it did? And, finally, if you were Brian Friel, would you change
something in the resolution of the script?

I really liked the text. I confess that I will return to a text that I think about more calmly in
the near future. I don't have a favorite part, but I really liked how the story is favorite. The rubric si is
very interesting and shows that of the initial characters in the important story, as it summarizes that of the
characters from the city of Baile Beag, there is a detailing of the main scenario of the initial play, very
important issues of the Iresa language and at least language presentation irisa and at least of less
presentation.
