T 4. Communication across cultures happen in one’s own country because
of the diverse domestic workforce of many companies today.

Pls. consider my assessment task 5-4 because I tried really hard to find someone
who I can interview for this assessment and hopefully I found someone with the
help of my family and this is his opinion after all. Prof I’ve already done this part
when you announced that we don’t need to answer this part.

Assessment Task 5-4


Interview a member of an expatriate community in the Philippines. An expatriate (also
referred to locally as “expat”) is a non- Filipino person who is temporarily residing in the
Philippines for business or work purposes. During your interview, ask about his/her
experiences in communicating with Filipinos. (15 pts)

1. What are your pleasant experiences in communicating with Filipinos?


As what he said, the pleasant experiences he experiences in
communicating with Filipinos starts with the way they treated him. He said that all
Filipinos are being polite and kind to him which makes him more comfortable while
staying here in the Philippines for work purposes. He said that Filipinos are good
in understanding and speaking English. He also said that he is somehow proud for
Filipinos even if he’s not a Filipino citizen because Filipinos can speak 2
languages which is English and Filipino language while him, he can only speak
English.
2. What are the challenging situations you have encountered?
For him, the challenging situation he encountered here in the Philippines is
his first day of staying here and it’s because of language barrier. Filipinos can
understand him while him, he doesn’t understand a thing when Filipinos start
speaking in Filipino language. He also finds it hard when he’s finding a meeting

place, it’s not his country that’s why he keeps asking for location with some
Filipinos and it came out that there are some places that’s called in Filipino
language.

3. How did you deal with these challenges?


He deals with these challenges by asking some Filipinos to elaborate or
explain more and patiently make him understand everything he wants to know.
Luckily, there are some good Filipinos with patience that’s trying hard to speak in
English to explain to him every single thing.
