dom aines de l’6 le ctricite et de l'6 le ctro n iq u e . A cet effe t, la CEI - entre a utres a ctivite s - publie des Norm es

1) The In te rn a tio n al E le ctro tech n ica l C om m ission (IE C ) is a w o rld w id e o rg a n iza tio n fo r sta n da rd iza tio n com prising
all national e le ctro te ch n ica l co m m itte e s (IEC N ational C om m ittees). The o bject o f IEC is to prom ote
in te rn a tio n a l co -o p e ra tion on all q u e stion s concerning sta n da rd iza tio n in the e le ctrica l and e le ctro n ic fields. To
th is end and in add itio n to o th er a ctivitie s, IEC publishes In te rn a tio n al Standards, T echnical S pecifications,

This In te rn atio na l Standard e sta b lish e s req uirem en ts fo r the d esign q u a lific a tio n o f balance-
of-system (BO S) co m p on en ts used in te rre stria l p h o to vo lta ic (P V ) system s. T his standard is
suitab le fo r ope ra tion in indoor, co nd itio ne d or unco nd itio n ed ; o r o u td o o r in g eneral o p e n-air
clim a tes as d efined in IEC 607 21 -2 -1 , protected or unp ro te cted . It is w ritten fo r dedicated
so la r co m ponents such as batterie s, inve rters, charge c o n tro lle rs, system diode packages,
heat sinks, surge p rotectors, system ju n c tio n boxes, m axim um pow er p oint trackin g devices
and sw itch gear, but m ay be app lica ble to o th e r BOS system com ponents.
T his standard is based on th a t w hich is specified in IEC 61215 and IEC 61646 fo r the design
q u a lifica tio n o f PV m odules. H ow ever, changes have been m ade to a cco u n t fo r the special
fe atures o f the b alan ce-o f-system com ponents, and to add d iffe re n t levels o f se ve rity fo r the
d iffe re n t se rvice enviro n m e nts. Dust, fu ng us, insects, shipping vibratio n and shock, and
p ro tectio n class have been added to the a pp ro priate e nviro n m e nta l c a teg ories. The high and
low te m p era ture and h um id ity lim its have also been m odified fo r the a pp ro priate se rvice
e nvironm ents.
This standard does not apply to p h o to vo lta ic m odules. These are covered by IEC 61215 or
IEC 61646. A lso, th is standard does not a pp ly to c o n ce n tra to r m odules o r to com p le te PV
system s. S p ecific e le ctrica l sa fe ty a spe cts are not part o f th is standard.
T his standard is app lica ble to lea d-a cid and nickel-cadm ium ce lls and batterie s. O ther
e le ctroch em ical sto ra ge system s w ill be included w hen they becom e a vailable.
The o b je ct o f th is te st sequence is to dete rm ine the perform ance c h a ra c te ris tic s o f each BOS
co m ponents and to show , as fa r as possible w ithin reason ab le co n s tra in ts o f cost and tim e,
th a t the co m p on en t is capable o f m aintain in g this perform ance a fte r expo sure to the sim ulated
se rvice natural e nviro n m e nta l co nd itio ns fo r w hich it is intended to be a pp lica ble as specified
by the m an ufa ctu re r. The actua l life e xpe ctan cy o f co m ponents so q ua lifie d w ill depend on
th e ir design, th e ir e n viro n m e nt and the system co nd itio ns u nder w hich th ey are operated.

3 Sampling
For q u a lifica tio n testing a q u a n tity o f a t least three sam ples o f a co m p on en t (plus spares as
desired) shall be taken at random from a p ro du ction batch or batches, in accorda nce w ith the
procedure given in IEC 60410. The co m ponents shall have been m anufactured from specified
m ate ria ls and co m ponents in accorda nce w ith the re le va n t d raw ings and process sheets and
shall have been su bjected to the m a n u fa ctu re r’s norm al in sp e ctio n , q u a lity control and
production a ccep tan ce p rocedures. The co m ponents shall be com plete in every detail and
shall be accom panied by the m an ufa ctu re r's handling, m ounting and co nn ectio n instru ction s,
including the m axim um p erm issible system voltage.

dam p heat, cyclic te st (see 11.15) shall be done. A fte r each basic e nviro n m e nta l test, a visual

The m an ufa ctu re r shall cle a rly sp ecify to the te s t lab the ope ra ting alg orith m o f the charge
co ntrolle r. If the b a tte ry voltage is used as the m ain param eter fo r the sw itchin g alg orith m , the
m an ufa ctu re r shall sp e cify these th re sho lds.
The charge co n tro lle r shall p ro tect the load from the o p e n -c irc u it voltage o f the P V -array, in
case the b attery has been d isco nn ected from the system . T his is an im p o rta n t fe ature o f good
charge co ntrolle rs, since m any loads can be d estroyed w hen th ey are exposed to the open-
circu it voltage o f the PV -array.
The m an ufa ctu re r shall su pp ly a d e fin itio n o f the o utp ut b eh aviou r in the case o f no b attery
connection.
C ertain special purpose charge co n tro lle rs, fo r exam ple d edicated c o n tro lle rs fo r ind ustry
a p p lica tio n s do not have a user feedback. The m an ufa ctu re r shall state this.
L ead-acid and nickel-cadm ium b atte rie s can o n ly be q ua lifie d according to th is standard fo r
the co nd itio ns ‘ind oo r co n d itio n e d ’ and ‘ind oo r u n c o n d itio n e d ’. T his im plies th a t m any tests
