NEWLY DIAGNOSED CASES

In May 2022, there were 1,308 confirmed HIV-positive individuals reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the
Philippines (HARP) and were accounted to the total (100,298)b reported cases since January 1984. Moreover, 30% (392) of
individuals reported in May had advanced HIV infection (214c based on immunologic criterion, additional 178 based on clinical
criteria) at the time of testing. Twenty-oned deaths were reported bringing the total of 214d deaths this year.
Ninety-five percent (1,236) of the reported cases were male while 5% (72) were females. Of the total reported cases this period,
60% (782) were cisgendere, 3% (33) were transgender women, 1% (13) identified their gender as others, and less than 1% (4) were
neither as man or woman, while 36% (476) had unknown gender identity.
Further, 48% (634) of the cases were 25-34 years old at the time of diagnosis, 32% (416) were 15-24 years old, 17% (220) were
35-49 years old, 3% (33) were 50 years and older, and less than 1% (5) were less than 15 years old. The age of reported cases
ranged from 3 to 72 years old (median: 28).
Geographic Distribution Mode of Transmission (MOT)
The regions with the most number of newly reported cases Of the total reported cases in May 2022, 97% (1,274) were
were NCR, CaLaBaRZon [4A], Central Luzon [3], Western transmitted through sexual contact. Further, less than 1% (6)

Pregnant Women with HIV

In May 2022, there were 7 HIV-positive pregnant women reported at the time of diagnosis. HIV+
Three cases were from 4A, and one case each were from NCR, MiMaRoPa [4B], 6 and 7. The Pregnant

Eighty-four Filipinos who worked overseas within the past five years, whether on land or at sea, were

Transactional Sex
In May 2022, 8% (109) of the newly reported cases engaged in transactional sex within the past 12 months. Ninety-five percent
(104) were male and the age of diagnosis ranged from 18 to 71 years old (median age: 31 ). Forty-eight percent (50) of the male
cases were paying for sex, 34% (35) reported accepting payment for sex, and 18% (19) were engaged in both. Of the five females
reported to have engaged in transactional sex for this period, 40% (2) were accepting payment, and 60% (3) were both paying
and accepting payment for sex. The age of the reported females ranged from 23 to 34 years old (median: 25).

Children (<10) & Adolescents (10-19)
There were 73 newly reported adolescents in May 2022. Of these, 27% (20) percent were 15-17 years old, and 73% (53) were
18-19 years old. Ninety-nine percent (72) of the reported cases were acquired through sexual contact (3 male-female sex, 54
male-male sex, 15 sex with both males & femalesh). Five children aged under 10 years were diagnosed with HIV and all were
transmitted through mother-to-child. The age of diagnosis ranged from 3 to 5 years old (median: 4).

Mortalityj
In May 2022, there were 21 reported deaths due to any cause among people diagnosed with HIV. All were males. Moreover, 5%
(1) was 15-24 years old, 76% (16) were 25-34 years old, and 19% (4) were 35-49 years old.

The top regions with the most number of reported deaths were Central Luzon [3] with 29% (6) of deaths, Cagayan Valley [2]
with 19% (4) of deaths, 14% (3) of deaths each were from NCR and 4A, and 24% (5) of deaths were from the rest of the country.

From January 1984 to May 2022, there were 5, 584 reported deaths. Further, one percent (37) of deaths were less than 15 years
old at the time of death, 22% (1,238) of deaths were 15-24 years old, 48% (2,704) were 25-34 years old, 24% (1,349) were 35-
49 years old, and 5% (253) were 50 years old and older. There were <1% (3) of deaths with no reported age at the time of death.

The HARP is the official record of total number of diagnoses (laboratory-confirmed), ART outcome status and deaths among people with HIV in the Philippines. All individuals in the registry are confirmed by the San Lazaro Hospital STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) which
is the HIV/AIDS National Reference Laboratory (NRL) and DOH Certified Rapid HIV Diagnostic Algorithm - rHIVda Confirmatory Laboratories (CrCLs). Confirmed HIV-positive individuals were reported to the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau (EB) and recorded to HARP. ART figures are counts of
HIV positive adult and pediatric patients currently enrolled and accessing Antiretroviral (ARV) medication during the reporting period in 158 treatment hubs and primary HIV care treatment facilities that had reported in the HARP. This report did not include patients who have previously
taken ARV but have died, left the country, have been lost to follow-up and/or opted not to take ARV. Lost to follow-up is considered once a person have failed to visit a treatment facility more than 3 months after the expected date of ARV refill.
HARP is a passive surveillance system. Except for HIV confirmation by the NRL & CrCLs, all other data submitted to the HARP are secondary and cannot be verified. Hence, HARP cannot determine if an individual’s reported place of residence is where the person got infected, or where the
person lived after being infected, or where the person is presently living. This limitation has major implications on data interpretation. Readers are advised to interpret the data with caution and consider other sources of information before arriving at conclusions.
