BLACK’S CLASSIFICATION OF CARIES

CARIOLOGY

● Was the most utilized classification

system with reference to the mode
of treatment of dental caries.
● Developed by G.V Black
(1836-1915) as a system to
categorize carious lesions based on
the type of tooth affected (anterior or
posterior tooth) and the location of
the lesion (e.g. lingual, buccal,
occlusal, etc.). CLASS III
● There are six classes of carious ● Dental caries in the proximal
lesions. surface of the anteriors
● Proximal surfaces of canines, and
incisors not involving the incisal
CLASS I angles
● Any caries that originated from a pit
or fissure
● Caries lesion located in:
- Pits or fissures (occlusal of
molars and premolars
posterior teeth)
- Facial and lingual (occlusal
⅔ of the buccal and lingual
surfaces of molars)
- Lingual surfaces or pit –
maxillary incisors
- Occasionally labial – middle

third
● The cavity from the proximal
surface of the anteriors is
extended up to the incisal angle
● Proximal surfaces of incisors or
canines which also involve one or
both of the incisal angles

CLASS II
● Also originate from class I but it is
extended up to proximal surface
either mesial or distal
● MO (mesio occlusal)
● Proximal surfaces (mesial or distal)
of molars and premolar
